                  University of York,

                 Deramore Lane, York YO10 5GH

I'm an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of York, UK. Before joining York, I have held several academic positions including a Senior Lecturer at Cardiff School of Technologies, Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK, a joint Research Fellowship at Lincoln Centre for Autonomous Systems (LCAS) and Lincoln Institute of Agri-Food Technology (LIAT), University of Lincoln, UK, a Research Assistant and a Teaching Assistant at Bournemouth University, UK, and a Lectureship at Zhongyuan University of Technology, China.  I also held academic positions as a Visiting Fellow at Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.

I am a Member of IEEE, IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS), IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society (SMC), IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) and IFAC. I'm member of IEEE Technical Committees (TC) on Bio Robotics, Soft Robotics, Robot Learning, and Safety, Security and Rescue Robotics. I've published over 100 journal and conference papers. I serve as an Associate Editor for IEEE Access and PeerJ Computer Science. I received the Global Peer Review Awards from Web of Science in 2019, and the Outstanding Contribution Awards from Elsevier in 2017. I was selected as regular Fundings/Grants reviewer for EPSRC, NIHR and NSFC. I have great experience in securing and involving in research projects and grants, including EPSRC, Innovate UK, Horizon 2020, Erasmus Mundus, FP7-PEOPLE, HEIF, NHS I4I, NSFC, etc. I also serve as a regular reviewer for about 30 mainstream journals and 8 flagship conferences across the domains of Robotics, artificial intelligence, and Control.

My research focuses on the convergence of robotics and biology. By understanding and abstracting the design principles found in biological systems, I cultivate expertise in several key areas, including modelling and transfer of human/animal excellence/knowledge for autonomous motion learning, detection & generation, enhancement of sensory-motor and learning capabilities, optimized morphological design for behavioural variability, optimal dynamics control for motor control learning. My primary objectives revolve around enhancing the comprehension of the biological underpinnings for lifelong learning, including adaptability and autonomy exhibited by animals, as well as creating innovative machine intelligence solutions, robotic systems, and applied control systems characterized by greater adaptability, resilience, and energy efficiency.

My research efforts encompass various specific areas, including human-robot collaboration & interaction, agriculture & aquaculture environment control, soft robotics & new actuations, rehabilitation, and embodied artificial intelligence.

I am always looking for talented, highly motivated PhD applicants with a Master degree or BSc/BEng degree in Engineering / Computer Science / Applied Mathematics. PhD positions with possible full/partial studentships in the area of:

Potential candidates are encouraged to contact Dr Pengcheng Liu directly for informal discussions.
