Formally established on 27 May 2007 by the founding members consisting of cricket players and Enthusiasts from the local Plett Community of New Horizons.
The initiative was driven by the Bitou Municipality Sports Desk headed by Mr Johannes Pika in a drive to establish a formal base for cricket in Plettenberg Bay by establishing cricket teams in all Bitou wards which was envisioned to ultimately feed players to a central Plettenberg Bay team.
After initial failure of the proposed structure due to lack of commitment from some of the wards, the founding members embarked on a mission to determine the various requirements to formally establish a club to join the SWD Cricket Structures. The name Pioneers Cricket Club was formally proposed by Mr. Eugene Puren identifying the club as the pioneering or leading cricket team in Plettenberg Bay. The name was formally accepted and adopted by the founding members.
Subsequently the formal constitution was adopted and Pioneers Cricket Club was established with the Executive Management team consisting of the following members:
Mr. Johnathan Pienaar - Club Chairman
Mr. Eugene Puren - Deputy Chairman
Mr. Howard Swarts -Club Secretary
Mr. Juan Windvogel- Deputy Secretary
Mr. Warren Beauzick - Club Treasurer
Mr. Bjorn Oraai - Additional Member
Mr. Ederich Cloete - Additional Member
Pioneers Cricket Club was formally accepted and included in the SWD Cricket League Structure to compete in the promotional league at the Union's Annual General meeting in July 2007.
The Pioneers Cricket Club played in its first official league match against Sedgefield Cricket Club in September of 2007. The club experienced early success in the 2008/09 season when we progressed and competed in the promotional league finals at the SWD Recreational Grounds in Oudtshoorn in only our second year competing but unfortunately came second on the day.
The club then reached play-off stages on various other occasions and was promoted to the Premier League in the 2016/17 season when we won the Promotion League finals against men from Great Brak.
Established a Ladies team who went off to reach the finals in their first season of the SWD T20 Women League.
Gwyn Lewis designed the new logo. The logo is a fresh new feel compared to the standard shield generally used through the ages. The logo was not officially accepted at this stage but decided to phase in the logo and test if the communities and players alike will accept this new look.
After much deliberation the newly elected Board for the 2022/2023 cricket season voted on a name change and concluded that the official name be changed from Pioneers Cricket Club to Plettenberg Bay Pioneers Cricket Club.
The Plettenberg Bay Pioneers Cricket Club also registered and was granted NPO status.
The Board members concluded the official use of the new logo and to be phased in to all playing attire and club branded items.
The 2024–25 season was one of mixed fortunes for the Plettenberg Bay Pioneers Cricket Club. While we celebrated several standout achievements, it was also a year of reflection and regrouping.
Our First Team faced a challenging campaign, ultimately resulting in relegation from the Premier League to the Promotion League. Despite this setback, the club remains determined to return stronger and more competitive in the seasons ahead.
The Women’s Team continued to showcase consistency and class by reaching the final of the SWD Women’s 30 Over Division 2—marking their fourth final appearance in five years. Their impressive performance was further highlighted by the club receiving the Fair Play Award at the annual SWD Award ceremony for the women's division 2 league competition. Our T20 Team also advanced to the semi-finals, demonstrating the depth of talent within our women's division.
Both the Second and Third Teams retained their positions in the Reserve League, with the Second Team also reaching the semi-finals. These consistent performances are a testament to the dedication and skill across all levels of the club.
Off the field, the club made strides in coaching development and community engagement, including participation in local mini-cricket initiatives and social team-building events. The season also saw individual players earn provincial recognition, reflecting the talent and growth nurtured within our club.
