Step-by-step guide to work with Air Dry Clay
Materials Needed
Air dry clay
Baking paper
Sculpting tools
Rolling pin
Small bowl of water (for smoothing clay)
Container of slip (water and clay for connecting pieces)
Fine-grit sandpaper (for finishing once dry)
Acrylic paints
Varnish (optional)
Instructions
Prepare Your Workspace and Clay
Work on a non-stick surface so the clay doesn't adhere as you work.
Pull off only the amount of clay you need and keep the rest sealed tightly in plastic wrap, as air-dry clay begins hardening immediately.
Knead (Wedge) the Clay
Condition the clay by kneading it with your hands for a minute or two. This warms it up, makes it pliable, and removes trapped air bubbles that could cause cracking.
Form Your Base Shape
Roll out flat slabs using a rolling pin or pinch and coil the clay into your desired shape.
Aim for an even thickness throughout your piece (ideally between 6mm and 12mm). If a piece is too thick, it takes longer to dry and may crack; if it's too thin, it will be brittle.
Attach Pieces Using "Score and Slip"
To attach two separate pieces of clay together, scratch a crosshatch pattern onto both joining surfaces using a toothpick or tool (scoring).
Apply a tiny dab of water or liquid clay slurry to the scored area, press the pieces together firmly, and smooth the joint line.
Smooth and Detail
Use a slightly damp finger to buff out finger marks, seams, or surface cracks. Avoid using too much water, as excess moisture causes shrinkage cracks while drying.
Add fine details, textures, or carved patterns using your sculpting tools.
Drying Process
Place your finished piece on parchment paper in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight, heat vents, or fans.
Allow it to dry completely for 24 to 72 hours depending on thickness and humidity. Gently flip the piece halfway through drying so the bottom dries evenly.
Painting, and Sealing
Paint your piece using acrylic paints.
Apply a coat of acrylic varnish or water-resistant sealant to protect the finish, as air-dry clay is not food-safe or naturally waterproof.
