Railfan on Instagram: "Thermit Rail Welding…🔥(Read Caption). . IN FRAME: An amazing capture of Rail Welding carried out by Civil Engineering department staff near Kathua Railway station. A complete welding from start to end takes nearly about 70 mins. The main steps involved are:- 1. Prepare rail to be welded: It involves adjusting the alignment of both rails, in line to each other & Setting the weld gap b/w the two rail pieces. 2. Clamp the moulds on to the rail. 3. Place Thermit portion into the crucible & Packing the molds properly with Luting sand, wet in nature due to the presence of sodium in it. It helps in retaining the hot molten metal inside the mold. 4. Preheat ends of the rails. 5. Ignite and pour steel: On igniting, the temperature inside raises upto 3500 degree Celsius inside within 30 secs due to which the molten metal pours down & fill the rail gap. 6. Demolding: Before remoulding, one must wait 4-5 mins & keep on removing the air bubbles inside the molten metal with the help of a iron rod. 7. Shear excess head metal: Extra excess metal is chipped off. 8. Rough grinding. 9. Final grinding: Smoothening the rail top & sides 🌸 . .
