Your battlefield is your front yard, split into 5 horizontal lanes where the wobbling zombies march, each sticking to their own path as they shuffle towards your house. To stop them, place plants that can either shoot at them or block their path.

But here's the catch: you need "sun" energy to grow these plants. You can collect it by clicking on the sunny tokens floating on the screen. You'll soon notice that different plants need different amounts of sun to grow. During the day, suns will fall from the sky every now and then, helping you get it faster. The good news is you can also grow special sunflowers to help produce even more sun.

You'll have a bunch of plant buddies to help out, and each one does something different. For instance, in the Adventure mode, you'll start with just the Peashooter. It's a little green plant that shoots peas to keep zombies away. As you keep playing, you'll discover more plant friends. Here are a few:

Your adventure starts during the day, but as you keep playing, you'll face challenges at night, too! Nighttime is tricky because there's no sun falling from the sky. You'll need to be clever and use special plants.

When navigating through various scenarios( during the day or night), you'll encounter zombies with their own quirky abilities and traits. Some carry poles to vault over your plants, some wear buckets as armor, and some zombies might even jump over plants, so always be on the lookout! Keeping an eye on their unique skills will help you decide which plants to pick and where to place them.

In moments of intense combat, it might happen that a zombie will slip past your leafy defenders and reach the end of a lane. When this happens, a trusty lawnmower will zoom forward, mowing down all zombies in that lane - but only once! If another zombie gets through the same lane, it's munching time for them, and game over for you.

- Survival Mode: Test how long you can withstand relentless waves of zombies with limited plant options. At the beginning of a new round, you get to choose your favorite plant seeds. However, you only have 4 slots available, so choose wisely.

A golden tip: Sunflowers are your best friends! Plant as many as you can early on to have lots of energy for bigger defenses later. And keep an eye out for the sneaky zombies with special gear. Try to bring more plant-power on that lane to get rid of them.

I keep reading conflicting stuff online that Plants V Zombies can be played offline with someone, but I can't find anything that says otherwise in the game menus. Anyone have the game that knows if local co-op is possible?

Update: I decided to take the plunge and see so others wouldn't have to. This game is a blatant cash grab. You cannot do any sort of multiplayer with another family member unless you buy two separate copies, two separate nintendo online subs and two nintendos. It's absurd that so many games offer couch co-op. This game only offers a lobby co-op and a few multiplayer choices. If you want to do main story, or anything else you won't be able to do it.

Plants vs. Zombies : Scheduled to debut on thePlayStation Network this February, this zombie-zapping downloadablegame challenges players to build an arsenal of loyal plants todefend their home against attacking waves of the undead.

In these early days for the two new consoles, Electronic Arts has firmly thrown its heft behind the Xbox One, with some exclusives for Microsofts new rig  most notably Titanfall, but also this clever reinvention of the archetypal, much-loved mobile tower-defence game. Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is strikingly different from its mobile forebears: a team-based third-person shooter. But it isnt your average shooter: it manages to preserve Plants Vs Zombies renowned humour and general wackiness  those zombies have never been dumber, nor the plants simultaneously cuter and more deadly.

Garden Warfare may initially disappoint traditionalists, as it has no single-player story mode (which is reflected in a lower-than-average price). Its split into two halves: in Garden Ops, you plant a garden and defend it (with up to three other fellow plants) against 10 waves of zombies; if you make it that far, waves five and ten will be studded with boss-zombies. To improve your odds, you can spawn tower-defence-style plants in pots.

But the meat of the game resides in Multiplayer. Noobs should head to Welcome Mat, a team death-match on giant maps, in which you receive health-boosts if you die quickly. Welcome Mat is worth visiting in order to level up quickly  its essential to unlock each of the different plants and zombies three special abilities before heading to more challenging pastures (although Garden Ops is also good for that). You level up by fulfilling challenges, which are easy at first, but become more arcane.

Team Vanquish is the most bite-sized mode: straightforward team death-match, in which a cumulative opposition 50 kills brings a team-win. But our favourite mode is Gardens Vs Graveyards, in which plants defend gardens, and if the zombies manage to over-run them, the action moves around the map  eventually culminating in an assault on Crazy Daves mansion or the menacing Tactical Cuke aimed at Zomboss Mountain.

Much of Garden Warfares appeal lies in the brilliantly conceived different types of plants and zombies  Peashooters, for example, are all-rounders, while Sunflowers are healers; the All-Star, meanwhile, is a zombie American Footballer who can plant tackle-pads for use as cover, while the Engineer can derive a speed-boost from his pneumatic drill or launch drones.

What the game calls consumables  offensive plants or all manner of hilarious zombies (one uses a chemical toilet as armour) that can be spawned  are great. You acquire them by using the in-game currency (earned from good play) to buy sticker-packs, which can also include customisation objects and rare items. Although theres no current indication that it will, this system seems set up to allow EA to start charging real money for in-game purchases, something it has received stick for in the past. And Garden Warfare makes you sign up to the companys unpopular Origin online service.

But even if, at some point, it does try to fleece you along such lines, you wont mind, since Garden Warfare is utterly beguiling  youd have to be beyond morose for it not to put a smile on your face. Its so well structured that it makes the ideal introduction to online shooters, and it will be fascinating to see how it develops, with new game modes and the like. A future cult-classic. ff782bc1db
