If you want a professional-grade communication headset with premium materials and active noise cancellation for adults, choose Plantronics 78712-101; if you need moisture-wicking comfort and ambient awareness for high-intensity workouts, choose RunPhones Classic Exercise Headphones.
While the Plantronics EncorePRO 710 is engineered for office environments and long calls, the RunPhones Classic is built specifically to handle sweat and movement without slipping. Both products solve audio problems, but they target completely different users and scenarios. The decision comes down to whether your priority is crystal-clear voice transmission in a quiet room or secure, breathable audio while you are moving. I have analyzed the specifications of both devices to help you decide which one fits your lifestyle, especially when considering unique needs like finding the best bluetooth earbuds for toddlers or a headphone for toddlers who need something durable yet safe.
• Plantronics 78712-101: Best for professionals needing superior microphone clarity and silence from distractions; trade-off is it is wired only and not designed for physical activity.
• RunPhones Classic Exercise Headphones: Best for athletes and travelers needing a washable headband that stays put during motion; trade-off is lack of active noise cancellation and no wireless capability.
• Who is Plantronics for? Call center agents, customer service representatives, and office workers who prioritize voice quality over mobility.
• Who is RunPhones for? Runners, gym-goers, yoga practitioners, and anyone who needs hands-free audio while keeping their ears open to the environment.
The Plantronics 78712-101 EncorePRO 710 is not a casual listening device; it is a tool designed for performance. If you spend eight hours a day on the phone or in video conferences, this headset addresses the specific pain points of fatigue and distraction. The design features an elegant satin finish and a slim profile that looks professional rather than bulky. The ear pads are made of soft leatherette, which provides a luxurious feel against the skin, a crucial detail for anyone wearing headphones for extended periods. You do not want hard plastic digging into your temples after an hour of back-to-back meetings.

The core strength of this unit lies in its microphone technology. It features a unique curved, telescoping boom that pivots to stay clear of your peripheral vision while delivering what the manufacturer describes as crystal-clear conversations. This is paired with an ultra-lightweight construction using nylon composite materials, weighing in at just 1.9 ounces. That featherweight design ensures that the headset does not pull on your head or cause neck strain. Furthermore, the quick disconnect feature allows you to walk away from your desk without unplugging a tangled mess of wires, offering a level of convenience essential for dynamic work environments.
However, this headset has strict limitations regarding where and how it can be used. It is a wired device with a USB connectivity option that requires a specific connection type, meaning you cannot simply pair it wirelessly with your phone or tablet. The frequency response tops out at 6,800 Hz, which is optimized for speech intelligibility rather than deep bass or high-fidelity music. It also includes Active Noise Cancellation, which is excellent for blocking out office chatter but makes it dangerous to wear while running outdoors since it cuts off ambient sound entirely. If you are looking for a gaming headset for toddlers or any headphone for toddlers who might get bored with heavy equipment, this is far too complex and expensive. It is strictly an adult communication tool.
The RunPhones Classic Exercise Headphones take a radically different approach by abandoning the traditional earbud or over-ear cup design for a flat speaker system embedded in a fabric headband. This product is built for the person who hates the feeling of things being shoved inside their ear canal. The speakers are described as "flat" and fully adjustable within the band, allowing them to sit comfortably over the ears without pressure. This design solves the age-old struggle of earbuds falling out during vigorous movement, whether you are boxing, doing cross-training, or simply jogging.
One of the most practical features for active users is the material composition. The headband is made of a moisture-wicking fabric that absorbs sweat before it can run down your face or into your eyes. This is a game-changer for long workouts where sweat management is critical. Unlike standard headphones that trap heat and sweat, this design allows you to throw the entire headband (minus the electronics) into the washing machine, ensuring hygiene after every sweaty session. The elastic nature of the band keeps the speakers snugly positioned so you can focus on your workout without constantly adjusting your gear.
Safety is another major pillar of this design. Because there is no active noise cancellation and the speakers are not sealed inside the ear, ambient sounds filter through freely. This allows runners to hear traffic, cyclists, or trainers behind them, significantly reducing the risk of accidents. However, this means you will not get the immersive, isolated experience of a noise-canceling headset. The connectivity is limited to a standard 3.5 mm jack, requiring a cable connection to your device. While this eliminates battery anxiety, it restricts your range of motion compared to wireless options. It is a rugged, simple solution for people who value function and safety over premium audio isolation.
• Best for voice clarity and professional calls → Plantronics 78712-101, thanks to its dedicated microphone boom and noise-canceling features.
• Best for staying put during intense movement → RunPhones Classic, because the elastic headband prevents slippage better than traditional ear cups.
• Best for sweat management and hygiene → RunPhones Classic, as the fabric is washable and wicks moisture away from the skin.
• Best for ambient awareness and outdoor safety → RunPhones Classic, since it does not block outside noise.
• Best for all-day comfort in a stationary setting → Plantronics 78712-101, with its leatherette pads and lightweight frame.
• Best for travel and sleeping → RunPhones Classic, as the flat speakers allow you to lie on your side without discomfort.
• Best for users who hate cables → Neither product is wireless, but Plantronics offers a quick-disconnect feature for easier cable management.
• Best for budget-conscious buyers seeking durability → RunPhones Classic, given its simple, washable construction.
In my opinion, if you are buying for yourself as an adult for work or serious fitness, these two products serve distinct masters. However, if you are searching for the best bluetooth earbuds for toddlers or a headphone for toddlers, neither of these is actually the right fit due to their adult sizing and wired limitations. That said, for the general market, I would choose the RunPhones Classic Exercise Headphones. The ability to wash the headband and the safety of hearing your surroundings make it a more versatile tool for a modern, active lifestyle. The Plantronics is a fantastic piece of engineering for the call center, but it lacks the adaptability that most people need in their daily lives.
