There are more than 1,100 native tree species in Kenya. The main threats to trees in the country are from habitat destruction for agriculture or development. Some Kenyan tree species are also selectively targeted for their timber or medicinal properties. BGCI has worked with partners in Kenya to carry out targeted conservation projects for some of the tree species most at risk of extinction. This initiative will identify appropriate conservation actions for groups of threatened Kenyan trees, enabling efforts to be scaled up.
Included in this initiative are all tree species native to Kenya and threatened with extinction according to the IUCN SSC Red List of Threatened Species assessment criteria, that is, all species categorised as Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN) or Vulnerable (VU). Species endemic to Kenya that are assessed as Near Threatened (NT) are also included. In addition, all taxa categorised as Data Deficient (DD) are included as studies indicate a disproportionate number of threatened taxa in this category (Bland et al., 2015).
