1. Practice Critical Thinking
1. Practice Critical Thinking
Check for plagiarism in the works that people in social media send, like artworks, videos, articles etc. before spreading and sharing these works to other people. Spreading these works can promote Plagiarism as the person who plagiarized can see that this actually can gain them their own fame and make them think that they can continue this act, so to stop them from doing this, don't spread these plagiarized works. You can either check by using plagiarism checkers found online or even checking comments or quote tweets under it that may contain the original creator claiming it was plagiarized or other people claiming it is.
2. Avoid Committing Unintentional Plagiarism
As there are a lot of cases of unintentional plagiarism like the ones from George Harrison and his song "My Sweet Lord" and Alex Haley and his book "Roots: The Saga of an American Family," one way to stop plagiarism is to be aware that you can be unintentionally plagiarizing and eventually learn of ways to be able to avoid committing this act. Promoting this act to other people can also help as well.
There are a lot of ways you can do this, one of which is to remember to keep citing sources and giving credit where credit is due. As plagiarism is the act of stealing or not acknowledging other people for the work they have done, giving credit using a references tab or just directly saying it was from someone can be one way to avoid committing plagiarism.
Another way is to make sure that you are quoting and paraphrasing correctly. You can avoid unintentionally plagiarizing in quoting by making sure that the text you are taking is enclosed between two quotation marks and putting an in-text citation or text that showcases who wrote that line. For paraphrasing this time, make sure to not only switch the order of the words but also the words in the text with their synonyms. When paraphrasing properly, you have to fully rewrite the original sentence in the way you understand it.
The last way that will be described here is to just directly use a plagiarism checker before submitting a work or posting something. As plagiarism checkers are the most surefire way of checking whether your work has parts that are plagiarized, this is definitely one of the best ways to avoid unintentional plagiarism. On these sites, they even tell which parts of the text contain plagiarism, so those who use them can easily locate the plagiarized parts and replace them accordingly.
As unintentional plagiarism is still considered plagiarism, it is also important to avoid this action. It not only ruins the integrity of our online and academic spaces but also promotes the act of plagiarism as a whole. It promotes the mindset of not checking your own works for plagiarism, so we need to be aware of this act as much as actual plagiarism.
3. Share and Spread our Facebook Page
As this group has its own Facebook page with its own infographics and videos that spread our advocacy against the problem of plagiarism, sharing and helping promote this site can help a lot more people be aware of this advocacy and the problem of plagiarism as well.
4. Help Promote other NGOs and Efforts to stop Plagiarism
IGEN isn't the only advocacy that helps stop the ongoing problem of plagiarism and informs them of the definitions, problems, and ways to prevent it; promoting and supporting sites can also greatly help in stopping plagiarism. These can be something as simple as sharing academic papers done on the problem or supporting petitions and organizations that help stop this problem by either donating or helping spread their cause to others.
