In the Summer of 2025, Adam Boswell was taking his 1968 Ford Mustang Coupe for weekly cruises throughout Placitas. While doing so, John Saunders would accompany Adam on occasion. In September of that year, the two met up at the Merc grocery store parking lot. While sipping on a bottle of Coke-a-cola and enjoying the outdoor view of the small Placitas neighborhood, Adam asked John for his thoughts about having a car show in the Merc parking lot for the upcoming future. John liked the idea and mentioned some of his contacts that owned classic and sports car vehicles. After a long discussion about ideas for car meetups at the Merc, the club had their first small gathering of 5 vehicles in the parking lot that November. Adam received positive feedback from business owners at the Merc, including from other car owners that attended the meetup that day. In January 2026, Adam decided to pair up with the business owners at the Merc and host a Cars and Coffee event every first Saturday of each month at 10 am.
To Adam's surprise, a near 20 vehicles attended the January Cars and Coffee meetup. This meetup mainly consisted of the Placitas Corvette club, which took a short hiatus from participating in car events due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the former Placitas Cafe going out of business. Adam began to ask John and fellow car owners for ideas about events they can create long-term for their car club. From those discussions, Adam came up with several ideas such as car cruises, dances and catering events! In February of 2026, Adam and John were in for an unexpected surprise at their Cars and Coffee event. A staggering 66 vehicles attended the meetup and filled the entire parking lot at the Merc! Adam thought it was fitting considering 2026 marked the 100th year anniversary of Route 66. The following Monday after the car gathering, the Cars and Coffee meetup in Placitas became more than just a simple car gathering. It became a car club and a well-known community. The name of the club became The Placitas & Albuquerque Car Club, which include car enthusiasts from a large variety of car clubs from Albuquerque while joining Placitas car residents for dine-ins, cruises and car meetups/shows.
