In the case of the used pkzip2 files there is a difference though. The pkzip2 files do not contain a hash of the password. It can therefore not be extracted as a hash and then cracked like one normally would.To guess the password, zip2john extracts data and checksums from the zip file and combines that in a predefined format. Second trick: pkzip archives also include another, smaller, checksum(just 1 or 2 bytes) of a tiny part of the packed data of each file.If that doesn't match, we can early reject. Although the -span option gets around the 4gig file size limit for FAT32, it does not fix the 4gig freespace bug over the network. You will find that pkzip cannot reliably backup to a drive over the network. There is a simple workaround. Instead of running pkzip on the machine that is being backed up, run pkzip on the machine that is storing the backup files.
