The Ohio Eta Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi was founded in 1950 by what was, at the time, the largest founding colony in the nation, standing strong at 150 men. Prior to becoming the Ohio Eta Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi, they were known as Sigma Beta Phi. Sigma Beta Phi was a local UT Fraternity founded in 1918 that resided in the West-End of Toledo. Being the largest fraternity on campus, they were known for organizing the first ever Songfest, the third oldest tradition at UT. The "Sig Bates" were known to be heavily involved in campus organizations such as "The Blockhouse" (the school yearbook), ARX, Student Government, and The Independent Collegian. The Homecoming Parade is named after Edward C. Schmakel, an accomplished Brother of Sigma Beta Phi.
Phi Kappa Psi Ohio Eta has thrived at the University of Toledo for almost seven decades. We have resided in McComas Village since the opening in 1990. The Ohio Eta Chapter has initiated over 1200 men of various backgrounds, passions, and career paths. Today, our Brotherhood includes more than 70 men who strive for excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service.
