Essential this sensor measures sound signal levels (not frequency). A key part of using this is adjusting the sensitivity via an on-board potentiometer. See link below for more information about the sound sensor along with examples that sample and plot data from it.

The article also describes the on-board potentiometer (POT) which controls how loud an input sound is required for the sensor to generates output (effectively its sensitivity). You will require a narrow edged tool, e.g. a screwdriver.
