"Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe." - Galileo Galilei
Welcome to the Department of Mathematics, where we explore the beauty and logic of mathematical structures that underlie our universe. Our department is dedicated to fostering a deep understanding of mathematical principles, promoting innovative research, and nurturing the next generation of mathematicians.
The Department of Mathematics was established in 1964. The Honours stream was introduced in 1985. The post graduation curriculum in Pure Mathematics has been introduced under the Calcutta University in the year 2018. The first batch of the M.Sc. in Pure Mathematics have passed out in the year under the pandemic situation. Here it is to be mentioned that all the students secured first class with high marks and few of them have obtained more than 70% marks. Second batch students also continued the classes in the pandemic environment and most of them secured first class with high scores.
Our faculty members are renowned experts in their fields, with research interests spanning pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. We offer a range of undergraduate program (affiliated by University of Calcutta) and post graduate program affiliated by Department of Pure Mathematics University of Calcutta which have designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in academia, industry, and beyond.
The departmental library has a collection of 600 books. The total number of computers available in the department is 9. Internet facilities are available. The department has a numerical laboratory as needed for the syllabus. Mathematics is a set of ideas and techniques that enable us to understand, analyze, and solve problems faced in the real world. It has scientific precision. It also has an aesthetic pleasure that fascinates and inspires those who understand it. Our graduates will venture into diverse careers since they are recognized for logical and rigorous thinking. The department has four full time faculties and two state aided college teachers (SACT). Among four full time faculties, one is designated as Associate Professor and three are Assistant Professors.
