The Smokey City Folk Festival, produced by Calliope was first held in 1977 and was held annually for 23 years In 20xx is was renamed the "Green City Folk Festival" to Emphasizing green initiatives and moved to Point Breeze's Mellon Park and the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts' pavilion
Calliope was founded by George Balderose and is based in the historic Calliope House, on Pittsburgh's North Side. Calliope holds held house concerts; published music, hosts a booking agency and the Balmoral School of Highland Bagpiping.

Calliope, founded in 1976, is an organize that promotes and preserves traditional and contemporary folk music and its allied arts. It does this through music presentations and educational programs. Calliope produces traditional and roots-based music events troughout the Western Pennsylvania. region. They present artists national and international reputation along with regional performers. The Calliope School of Folk Music, Dance, and Craft instruction in heritage-based music and craft to adults, teens, and children through classes, workshops, jam sessions, and collaborations with other organizations.
Calliope's music productions include the Calliope Concerts Series held at the 600-seat Carengie Libary Lecture hall. The Calliope Roots Cellar Serie that presents best national and international folk musicians in in the intimate, club-like atmosphere of Roots Cellar at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. The Emerging Legends Concerts present in collaboraton with the University of Pittsburgh Library System to present national touring and regional artists at The Cup & Chaucer.
it also sponsorsweekly/monthly workshops and open stage nights for regional songwriters and performers including the Calliope Folk Song Night, the Pittsburgh Songwriters Circle, Calliope Songwriters Open Stage, Calliope Old-time Jam, Calliope Bluegrass Jam.
