Understanding & Finding Treatment

What Treatments work?

Obssessive Compulsive Disorder is treated with Exposure and Response Prevention therapy (abbreviated as ERP). ERP is the gold standard treatment for OCD.

"Not all therapists and psychologists are able to provide ERP."

In case you are wondering..

What happens during ERP?

Exposure and Response Prevention involves purposefully facing what you fear the most (exposure) without doing compulsions to relieve the anxiety (response prevention).

Will medication such as an antidepressant get rid of OCD?

Many people with OCD take medication like SSRIs (antidepressants), but medication is recommended alongside ERP. ERP is the single most effective form of treatment for OCD.

Are other types of therapy helpful?

Other types of therapy, if combined with ERP, could potentially be used. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based therapies can be used in conjunction with ERP.

Keep in mind that some forms of therapy, such as psychoanalysis and "talk therapy" can reinforce OCD and be harmful.

Is there a cure for OCD?

There is no known cure, but there is an effective treatment.

Finding Treatment

  1. Search the IOCDF database or Psychology Today databases.
  2. Make sure the therapist uses Exposure and Response Prevention.
  3. Reach out to the therapist and/or review their website to ensure they are using evidence-based therapies and primarily specialize in OCD.
  4. If possible, visit a local OCD support group and read reviews.
