The New Zealand Pipit is supposed to be widespread but only a bit uncommon; however, the Pipit distribution in New Zealand may be patchier and the population lower than we think! Pipits have declined through more intensive farmland use, drought and introduced predators, especially rats. It seems like the only place where pipits are truly safe are in wetlands and remote grasslands without predators!
The only way we can really tell if the Pipit needs help is by trying to locate its populations and seeing if there really is a decline, so we can protect the areas where all of the Pipit live.
If you have seen the Pipit before, please report it by filling out the form on the 'Report a Bird' part of this website to help us get one step closer to saving the pipit. You can also check out the map to see all sightings that have been reported.
