Have you ever wondered where maple syrup comes from and how it is made? Plants use a process called PHOTOSYNTHESIS to convert sunlight energy, water, and air into sugars. Learn how we collect this sweet sap from the maple tree and make maple syrup.

Many of us learned how to sort our waste at school. For years, Ms. Maria, our school RISE Coordinator, helped us properly place our lunch waste into one of 4 bins: paper, rigid containers (plastic, glass, and metal), compost, and finally trash. Though we are not at school, we can still sort our trash and help the environment! Check out the lesson and watch a video to learn how to sort your waste at home!

It is time to plant garlic at the Pioneer Elementary Garden! Watch a video starring Ms. Tiffany to learn how. Reserve a time for your family to visit the garden and plant garlic in one of the raised beds. One family or household in the garden at at time please. Check out our garden recipes for garlic bread and sauteed kale with garlic!

This week we are interrupting our normal programming on WASTE REDUCTION to bring you a SPECIAL episode by my friend, Farmer Jenn, from Birch Lane Elementary School in Davis! Students will learn about how cover crops can magically improve poor garden soil in a few months.

Students will learn about waste reduction and challenge themselves to "shrink their trashcans” by REDUCING, REUSING, and REPURPOSING. This lesson includes some simple arithmetic exercises, links to a Halloween craft made from repurposed materials, a link to a reading of a Curious George book about repurposing rubbish, and a short quiz (in the form of a Google Form).

Where Does our Garbage Go?

Americans generate an average of 4.5 pounds of waste every day, a greater amount per person than in any other country! Where does all our waste go?

Garden coordinators from all over Davis are collaborating this year to provide garden content to students! Here's the first video produced under the umbrella of Davis Farm to School! In this video, kids will meet our wonderful coordinators and learn how to transplant winter veggies. This lesson also includes a second video that shows students how to make a simple planter out of a milk or salad container.

Virtual Field Trips

Join me on a virtual field trip to Vine Ray Farms where farmers Jen, Bob, and Skye Adams cultivate their 1 acre Market Garden using horses rather than petroleum-fueled tractors. Safe Video Link : https://video.link/w/Yuzsb

Vine Ray Farm owner, Jen Adams, talks about the history of her family farm and shares some tips about the vegetables she grows in the farm's market garden.
