Community service is one of the key pillars of Pi Nu Psi, reflecting our commitment to empowerment, cultural pride, and sisterhood. By giving back to our communities, we live out our values, strengthen our bonds and develop leadership skills, all while making a meaningful impact together. See below for some examples of different community service we've done so far!
Pi Nu Psi's main Philanthropy is Autism Awareness, and this year we honored April as Autism Awareness Month through an Instagram campaign which you can view here!
Our goal with this campaign was to share information about autism, as well as organizations and events that contribute to autism awareness/research and are designed to benefit those in the autism and overall neurodivergent community. Regardless of if you or someone you know is on the spectrum, being informed allows people to be aware, show acceptance, and provide appropriate support.
Also in April, Pi Nu Psi, family, and friends participated in San Diego's 20th Anniversary Superhero Race for Autism 5k Run/Walk! At this event, our members were able to promote awareness, shine a spotlight on neuro-diversity and inclusion efforts, and support local autism programs and initiatives.
A second social media initiative Pi Nu Psi is conducting is highlighting organizations within San Diego and beyond that support autism and neurodivergent communities!
Our first chosen organization is Autism Society of San Diego - read more about them and their upcoming events here and check out their Instagram @autismsocietysandiego and website https://www.autismsocietysandiego.org/
Our most recent Instagram campaign highlights Sensory Overload. Our goal of this campaign is to spread awareness on what sensory overload is, how it affects those with autism during the holidays, as well as different strategies to help cope with it.
Because sensory overload can happen to anyone and isn't only prominent in those with autism, these strategies can be applicable to anyone who may experience sensory overload!
In August, we concluded fundraising for the non-profit organization Lilly's Voice to help families obtain their own Augmentative and Assistive Communication Devices!
By ordering a Digital Dozens, participants helped our sorority raise $120!
In October, we collaborated with The TERi Campus of Life - a nonprofit organization and Training, Education, and Research Institute whose goal is “to improve the quality of life for children and adults with developmental and learning disabilities, and to change the way the world sees them, allowing for inclusion within the community.”
At the San Marcos location, Karina and Jerri volunteered at their debut "Ghostlight" show, a musical production put together by the TERi Players, members of The TERi Campus!
Every month we host at the House of Philippines Cottage located in Balboa Park!
This cottage features artifacts, infographics and other items representative of the Filipino culture. Through hosting, Pi Nu Psi is able to preserve and share our culture with the general public.
Visit the sisters of PNY as we host at the cottage every first Saturday of each month!
One way Pi Nu Psi enjoys connecting with Philippine culture is by learning and performing folk dances!
So far we have learned the dances Itik-Itik, Pagapir, and Bulaklakan and have performed for House of Philippines's Lawn Program and Rady's Children Hospital Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Event.
We can't wait to learn more dances and share them soon!
On July 13th, our sisters Jerri and Angeline volunteered with Sharia's Closet, a local non-profit organization that provides free, emergency clothing and hygiene products to those in need.
From folding and sorting incoming donations to packing bags with requested items, it was amazing seeing the hard work all volunteers put in to making a difference. If you or someone you know would like to request a package or volunteer, see their website at https://www.shariascloset.org/.
Every year, Pi Nu Psi participates in Operation Christmas Child - collaborating with local organizations to fill shoeboxes with toys, hygiene items, and school supplies for children around the world!
In previous years, our boxes have been sent to children in the Philippines, and it brings us much joy to prepare shoeboxes with fun and useful items for the Christmas season.
This year, Pi Nu Psi put together and shipped 90 boxes for Operation Christmas Child, many of which have been sent to children in Thailand! Thank you to our Philanthropy Coordinator Jerri for her hard work in organizing this!
On August 20th, Pi Nu Psi visited the Air and Space Museum and volunteered with Operation Gratitude, an organization whose mission is to say thank you to our military and first responders for their service.
Along with writing letters of gratitude, our sisters joined the assembly line and helped put together care packages with items like toiletries, board games, cookies, Beanie Babies, crocheted blankets, paracord lanyards, and other carefully chosen items to help boost morale and bring comfort to our service members!
If you would like to participate in a packing day near you or even create and donate your own items from home, check out their website https://www.operationgratitude.com/.
On August 17th, Pi Nu Psi visited Imperial Beach to help clean up trash from their shores!
With some gloves, trash bags, music and hard work, we filled up about 2-3 bags of trash and counted 125 cigarette butts. With it also being IB's Sun and Sea Festival, we rewarded ourselves with some refreshing mango ice cream at the end~
Following our Beach Clean Up, Pi Nu Psi had the opportunity to table at "Party Wit A Pare & Mare" - an event hosted to highlight Filipino creatives, vendors, organizations, and restaurants!
We had so much fun meeting and networking with other community members and being able to talk about our sorority and Autism Awareness.
We look forward to tabling at future events soon!
On Saturday September 21, Pi Nu Psi volunteered at the American Heart Association's Heart & Stroke Walk! The day started early at 5:00AM at Balboa Park in San Diego, and we had a super fun time cheering on walkers, including our very own Joanne Rullan, a heart and stroke survivor!
We are happy to support Joanne, survivors, family, and our community through this event, and a special thanks to Madeleine Delacruz and Gabriel Tuazon for volunteering with us!
On December 14th, the sisters of Pi Nu Psi supported Wreaths Across America, a national nonprofit whose year-long mission is to Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and Teach our children the value of freedom. Each year, volunteers gather in local, state, and national cemeteries to pay tribute to our nation’s servicemembers and their families by placing wreaths on the headstones of these servicemembers.
Joanne, Jaslyn, Jiselle, and Angeline woke up bright and early to drive up to Riverside National Cemetery, where collectively they placed 130 wreaths!
Karina, Jerri, and Farnelle volunteered at the Miramar National Cemetery where they were able to visit and pay tribute to Chris De La Cruz, veteran and father of our very own Jo Panganiban!
