Saint Francis Basilica, Assisi
Saint Francis was born in Assisi and his tomb is a popular pilgrimage and tourist site in Assisi. Construction on the large church started in 1228 when Saint Francis was canonized. The basilica is built into the side of a hill and comprises two churches (known as the Upper Church and the Lower Church) and a crypt below Saint Francis Basilica, where the remains of the saint are interred.
