For the first time since 2004, Rolling Stone magazine has released a new 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. A culmination of efforts by songwriters, artists, producers, industry professionals, journalists, and staff, it was pared down fro an initial 4000 songs. (You can find a breakdown of the voting process here.)

Chopin composed his most well-known nocturne at the tender age of 20, which perhaps accounts for its youthful passion. The build-up from the main theme and waltz-like accompaniment to the dramatic trill-filled finale makes the Nocturne in E-flat Major a strong contender for the most beautiful piano work ever written.

Rebecca Clarke was a 20th-century British composer, who trained at the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music in London before crossing the pond and spending the rest of her life in America. Her music is always thrilling, experimental and enormously powerful. Her Viola Sonata is considered one of the greatest pieces ever written for the instrument. And just listen to the power packed into her Piano Trio for piano, cello and violin.

In my 35+ years of writing music for piano, I've composed and arranged over 200 works for solo piano, most of them original. A fan who read my advice for pianists article asked if I'd write a similar article for beginning composers. So, I've put together these 12 tips for anyone who would like to compose music for the piano.

You don't have to come to the piano with an entire musical idea already in your head before you start composing. Just start with one simple melodic phrase. That melody will be the centerpiece for everything else in your composition. It's the foundation and the focal point of your piece. As you begin to compose, improvise on that melody and see where it naturally wants to take you. The musical place it leads you to is usually your 'hook', or what I'll refer to in this article as your chorus. Think of your chorus as your melodic destination.

One of the reasons I think people enjoy my compositions is that they are basically songs. I write them to be, for lack of a better description, songs without words (sorry for the clich). Every one of my "songs" has a verse/chorus/bridge pattern to it. For example, listen to 'One Night at Mozart's', one of my popular pieces from my early years. Here's the pattern:

The biggest mistake I hear in others' composition is over-complexity. For some reason, beginning composers try to make things complicated - as if bigger is better. Part of this, I think, is the need to impress others, and part of it is the mistaken assumption that the more complex a work is, the more significance it has. No, no no. Simplicity is the key to beauty. Clarity is the key to perfection. Don't write to impress and don't write because you are seeking significance. Just find a simple melody, develop it, give it a twist, and finish it. You should be able to do it in less than 4 minutes. If you have a composition (for solo piano) over five minutes, examine it closely. You might be doing more than you need to.

Finally, keep your phone (or however you prefer to record) near you so you can record your ideas while you're still sitting at the piano. There's nothing more frustrating that having a great idea, getting interrupted, and then forgetting it. With a phone handy you can take the two minutes you need to record a rough-draft or melodic idea and come back to it later if need be.

According to this study by Peter Jutras, learning and playing piano gives people feelings of accomplishment and confidence. This can also apply to other instruments like the ukulele and trying to learn drums.

Another song by the Beatles (and I only allow myself 2!), Yesterday is another simple piano song that sounds a lot trickier than it actual is. Though it was originally written for guitar, it translates well to piano.

You may not be instantly familiar with All That Jazz, but the catchy piano part with stick in your ear. If you manage to move beyond the simple piano accompaniment to add some filler parts, your audience will be floored.

Many first-time piano players start out with this song. It can also be played as a duet where two players sit side by side at the piano; one will play the chords (C-Amin-F-G) while the other contributes to the melody. To be honest, the chords I use to play this song are slightly different as I replace the F with D major: (C-Amin-D-G).

One thing that all musicians, including piano players, should know is how to read music. It is necessary if you ever want to play with other musicians in a band, to write a song, or to be able to play anything just by reading it off sheet music.

Thank you for telling me that if I am able to put enough effort and dedication to learning, I will soon have the ability to play by ear. I found an old piano in our attic and my mother told me that it was previously owned by my grandfather. It is a little out of tune, but seeing the instrument is enough to entice me and now I am determined to learn how to. I will take it to a tuning expert and try playing a simple song soon enough.

For the 1981 Tschaikovsky Festival, Jerome Robbins chose 15 of the composer's piano pieces to weave into a ballet with a Russian peasant flavor. Tschaikovsky wrote such pieces because they were easily marketable to amateur musicians. Although he enjoyed composing to order, he once remarked, "I continue to bake musical pancakes. Today the tenth has been tossed." To compose these miniature musical vignettes with a great deal of character, Tschaikovsky said, "One needs a definite plot or text, a time limit, and a promise of several hundred ruble notes." The Seasons, one of the series of pieces used in the ballet, demonstrates the simplicity of form that allowed Tschaikovsky to feature his inspired talent for melodies. The ballet, a collection of group works, solos, and pas de deux, demonstrates Robbins' love for folk dances, ensemble interaction, and musical phrasing.
