About Me
I'm Sam Jones, and I've been playing piano for over 20 years. I earned two M.M. degrees in Piano Performance and Education from Butler University, where I am currently employed as a teaching fellow!
Learning about music has helped me appreciate it as an art, and not just the kind of art we learn about in school or the museum. Did you know...
In Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, multiple musical numbers feature the ancient Dies Irae chant, historically used in funeral masses describing the judgment of the dead?
In Disney's Encanto, the lyrics to Luisa's song "Surface Pressure" heavily emphasize the "urr" sound—usually avoided at all costs by singers—to accentuate her coarse and rugged character? (Ner-vous, sur-face)
In The Legend of Zelda series, many tracks use melodic modes commonly found in Anglo-European and Gaelic folk melodies?
There are so many more examples from media we enjoy every day! If you want to go from "I like this song." to "I like how the composer..." then consider coming to Garfield Park for music lessons! Not only will you learn about history and music, but also about yourself and what your artistic ideals are.
