Background & Lab Introduction

In class, we have begun to learn about fluids and density. For this lab, we were tasked to determine the density of three different liquids. We had to find mass, volume, density, theoretical density, and percent error. We were also tasked to use 3 different metals in water and calculate mass in air, mass in fluid, buoyancy, volume, density, theoretical density, and percent error.

Methods

For the first task/table 1: We weighed an empty cylinder (41g). Then, we added the fluid. Next, we calculated the fluid mass by weighing it again and subtracting 41g. To calculate the volume, we did V=pir^2h. For density, we did mass divided by volume * 1000. The theoretical was given. To find percent error, we did (|calculated-theoretical|)/theoretical. This process was completed for water, alcohol, and coke.

For the second task/table 2: We used the same cylinder (41g). Then, we added water. Next, we calculated the mass in air by hanging the metal from a string. Then, we calculated the mass in water by adding the metal to the water and weighing it. Volume, density, and percent error were calculated the same way as task 1. We calculated the buoyant force by mass of the cylinder in air - mass of cylinder in liquid. This process was repeated for the three different metals.

Results:

This lab helped us understand the relation between mass, volume, and density. Different liquids and metals have various densities. There are a few differences in analyzing a solid in water and analyzing a liquid by itself.
