Amireault, S., Fong, A. J., & Sabiston, C. M. (2018). Promoting healthy eating and physical activity behaviors: A systematic review of multiple health behavior change interventions among cancer survivors. American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, 12(3), 184-199. doi.org/10.1177/1559827616661490
One of the most recommended strategies for improving health and well-being for cancer survivors is adherence to a healthy diet and regular physical activity. Multiple health behavior change (MHBC) interventions are designed to improve two or more health behaviors (either simultaneously or sequentially) which affect survivors’ overall well-being. To ensure the optimization of these interventions, Amireault, Fong, and Sabiston conducted a systematic review to evaluate effectiveness and compare intervention designs. In a review of 27 studies which utilized MHBC interventions, the researchers found that a simultaneous design was used for a majority of the interventions, making it difficult to identify which design approach is the most effective. The researchers also found that interventions had varying effects on survivors’ health and well-being, however, the study suggests several changes that can be made in similar studies moving forward.
