Amireault, S., Baier, J. M., & Spencer, J. R. (2019). Physical activity preferences among older adults: A systematic review. Journal of Aging and Physical Activity, 27(1), 128-139. doi.org/10.1123/japa.2017-0234.
One of the most effective ways to promote healthy aging is physical activity, however, older adults are the least physically active of any age group. This is an issue that should be addressed, considering physical activity enhances not only life expectancy but life quality. Amireault, Baier, and Spencer reviewed a total of 21 studies to identify what types of physical activity older adults prefer, so that health care providers can offer more targeted health and exercise suggestions. In their study, the researchers found that a majority of older adults prefer walking above other physical activities, as well as engaging in physical activity continuously for about 30 minutes. While these findings are most generalizable for white-Caucasian females from the U.S., health care providers should consider walkability in their efforts to promote physical activity in older adults.
