Galaxy of Heroes allows players to collect Star Wars characters from both the main canonical universe established after Lucasfilm was acquired by The Walt Disney Company and the Legends-canon Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series, create teams with them, and use them to fight in turn-based battles. There are multiple ways to collect characters: some are given to players immediately, whereas others are gained via game play or as in-game rewards in the form of shards that are earned by players to unlock and or promote their characters. Shards can either be earned from battles or bought from a shop. Maximizing one non-event character's rarity to seven stars unlocks a special shop in which excess shards from seven-star non-event heroes can be exchanged for gear. The shard amount needed for the character to be unlocked will also correspond to their starting star level, which can range from one to seven stars. Characters can be promoted to a max of seven stars with each additional star increasing their power. There are also training droids that can provide varying levels of experience points to level up characters. Gear, mods, and ability parts can all upgrade characters, although some gear can primarily be won only from battles for one particular side of the Force, to encourage players to play on both sides. The maximum level cap in Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes is 85, which was changed from the previous level cap of 80 (previously 70). The maximum gear level is gear 13; beyond this, characters improve their "Mastery" with Relic Amplifiers, which have a maximum of level 9 (previously 8). Players level up their user level by gaining experience by completing daily quests or completing battles. The main currencies of the game are "credits" and "crystals". Credits can be used to train a hero, buy things from the store, obtain a hero when you have enough shards or promote a hero's star rarity. Crystals can be used to buy packs from the store, buy credits, acquire character shards, and energy and arena attempt refreshes. Crystals can be bought with money or can be earned as rewards from arena and daily challenges.
There are various modes for players to engage in, including squad arena (player vs. player), dark and light side battles, cantina, galactic wars, raids, and various special events. All modes are played versus the computer controlled AI, including the squad arena battles in which the AI controls a player-created team.

There was only one instance of using airplane mode for a battle in tw. I never had connection error messages on the other freezes. Any successful battles have all been completed on an iOS tablet rather than my Android phone. When the game is first opened on the android phone sometimes I can do a battle though they lag terribly. If the game has been open for more than a few minutes, it freezes either as I open a game mode or immediately after starting a battle and the entire app is unresponsive. Unless the game generates data everytime a game mode is opened, nothing would show in logs as it mistly freezes on the main arena table screen where you can choose between squad and fleet arenas- before I can even get to a battle. Again this only started after the latest update, nothing else changed on my phone.
SWGoH is a sandbox collector RPG where players collect characters and ships ("toons"), upgrading them and creating teams of up to 5 units which are then brought into the turn-based combat system against a group of enemy AI-controlled units and player-made teams. These game modes pit players up against specific enemies for unique rewards. The Journey Guide requires players level up specific characters in order to unlock "legendary" or "epic confrontation" characters, such as requiring 5 Jedi characters at 5 stars to unlock a 5 star Grand Master Yoda, or requiring 14 characters and ships at gear tier 13 with many relics in order to unlock a Galactic Legend, the best units in the game that manipulate character stats in battle to their advantage. The events tab provides access to many limited time events that often require specific factions leveled up in order to gain rewards.

This campaign is the main focus of the game. Players engage in increasingly difficult battles to test their team against AI opponents. The only restriction is that the Light Side battles can only be fought with Light side heroes, and the Dark Side battles can only be fought with Dark Side heroes. These battles start off very easy but ramp up the difficulty quickly. Each battle rewards the player with the major currencies (outlined later) but these battles are mostly for collecting randomly dropping gear. Each level can drop very specific gear which is needed to upgrade specific characters. So as a player you want to unlock all the levels to be able to collect all the materials you may need for upgrades.
Because every mode in the game highly incentivizes having a variety of heroes, and grinding for new heroes is far more difficult than just spending money, this primes the player to spend.
The campaign modes pit your squad against a series of AI squads in a round-robin matchup that increases in difficulty with each victory. Your squad does not start off fully healed after each battle, and therefore you are tasked with keeping your team alive throughout each battle until a mission is complete. PvP requires no real explanation; your squad faces off against the squad of a human opponent. Those interested in bragging rights may find themselves driven to best their human competitors, but there is not much else offered by the PvP modes.
Completing Daily Challenges is essential to playing through the game without having to spend real currency. As such, the game comes down to being a grind heavy session for those that do not wish to pay out-of-pocket to progress past the pay-wall. No matter which mode you choose, you will find yourself doing the same thing; assembling a team of heroes and fighting a turn-based battle.
