Many children want to be an artist of some sort when they grow up. As an indecisive child, I constantly changed my mind of what I wanted to be. I continued to change my mind as I grew up. Passionate about so many things, I felt that I could never commit to one career.
That was before I watched a totally legal recording of In the Heights by Lin-Manuel Miranda in seventh grade.
Completely taken aback by the performance, I craved more. I watched musical after musical, becoming more drawn in with each one. It was not long before I decided to finally declare to my family and friends:Â
I want to do theatre as my career.
An amazing high school theatre teacher and a life-changing theatre design summer program later, I am now a theatre major at Texas State University, pursuing the dreams of younger me, the dreams that I was told were unachievable and unattainable. I am not doing this to prove anyone wrong. I am doing this to be able to look back at my past self and make her proud. I am doing this because it is what I love.
Thank you to my family, friends, and mentors who have supported me in all that I do.
