some thoughts

I consider myself fortunate to have  the opportunity to ponder over curious questions, and to interact with bright younger students.  As I gather experience in my journey, I feel the necessity to  communicate on certain aspects, which may possibly be useful for someone younger, walking on a similar path. On this page I plan to write such stuff. The thoughts and the experiences are personal.

1.  Requests for reference (if you're a younger student, considering to contact me for a reference, please read this before writing to me) :

I have been receiving many requests for reference letters for summer program applications and  graduate studies.  I really appreciate that you're interested in basic science. As there are many requests,  it takes considerable  time to respond,  so I am summarising my thoughts here.

Please note that while I do not intend to judge anyone , in a letter I am expected to provide my critical opinion on the applicant on several grounds (related to academic potential, research aptitude etc.), based on my interactions with the person. Possibly to keep a certain sense of objectivity, it is  expected to support the comments based on the academic performance and/or experience based on a (long-term) project.  Thus, you're very welcome to request for a reference, if you need one from me, in the following scenarios :

 a) (if) you have taken (at least) two courses [and have secured the highest grade,  it will be great if you have also participated in classroom discussions],

b) (if) you have pursued a long-term (reading/research)  project with me (and have been serious about it).

In such cases,  I will certainly consider your request and will (most likely) be glad to support your applications providing an effective letter of reference.

If this is not the case, I would request you not to consider me for a reference. You may still write to me, but it  would be good to have a primary letter of reference from someone else,  and my letter, if necessary, may serve as a secondary reference. Kindly note that this  does not imply any judgement/opinion on your academic (or otherwise) potential, just that my letter may not be effective and may not help your cause; please do not assume otherwise.  I sincerely wish you all the very best in your pursuit.

Also,  please give at least one week to consider and respond to your reference request; please consider that we are usually dealing with several things. Thanks for your understanding.
