My Connection with Coach K

One of the most meaningful influences in my journey came from legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski — “Coach K.”

As a young 8th grader on the Westside of Chicago, I played in a basketball tournament at Weber High School, Coach K’s alma mater. I was honored to be selected for the All-Star team, and even more honored to hear Coach K speak during that event. His words of encouragement about discipline, teamwork, and believing in yourself left a lasting impression on me at a pivotal age.

Years later, I had the opportunity to meet Coach K again after his retirement from Duke University, where he had built one of the greatest legacies in college basketball. During our conversation, I shared the impact his message had made on me as a young student-athlete. With humility and kindness, Coach K gave me his blessing to carry forward the name “Coach K” in my own journey of coaching, leadership, and personal development.

For me, this isn’t just a nickname — it’s a reminder of the values Coach K embodied: integrity, leadership, discipline, and the power of inspiring others. At Phoenix Renew, I carry those same principles into my work with individuals, teams, and organizations.

Being called “Coach K” isn’t about basketball — it’s about leadership, resilience, and helping people become the best version of themselves.
