Sunday in Sedona
All Trails: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/arizona/mt-wrightson-via-old-baldy-trail
Distance: 10.8 miles
Elevation: 3,969'
Difficulty: Hard
What to expect:
There is an upper and lower parking lot for the Mt Wrightson picnic area. We had no problem finding a place to park for a group hike in mid-April.
The America the Beautiful National Park Pass is accepted here. Otherwise, there is a kiosk so you can pay for parking.
The first half of the trail, about 2.6 miles, is mostly dirt with very few rocks and tree roots that need to be stepped over. There is plenty of shade. You will be consistently climbing along meandering switchbacks.
There is a memorial at the halfway point for three Boy Scouts who died in November 1958 on Mt. Wrightson during a blizzard.
The views continue to get better as you reach a higher elevation. It is still a steady climb up. Once you pass the sign for Bellows Spring, the trail has a lot more loose rock. There are a lot of switchbacks, and the intensity of the climb increases.
