If you want ultra-natural low frequencies and the flexibility to swap between closed and semi-open acoustic designs for precise studio monitoring, choose PHONON SMB-01; if you need a wide, natural soundstage with ultra-fast transient response from a planar magnetic driver for critical listening or gaming, choose ZRATFWLJMDK Over-Ear Full-Size Planar.
• PHONON SMB-01: Its biggest strength is the unique interchangeable ear plate system that lets you switch between closed-dynamic and semi-open sonic signatures in one unit, while its trade-off is the higher complexity and cost associated with these modular components. This pick is for the audiophile who wants a single Japanese-crafted unit to adapt to different listening environments.
• ZRATFWLJMDK Over-Ear Full-Size Planar: Its biggest strength is the open-back orthodynamic planar design that delivers an expansive soundstage and uniform frequency response, while its trade-off is the lack of isolation and the absence of any built-in microphone or controls. This pick is for the desktop listener who prioritizes raw audio fidelity and speed over portability or call functionality.
The PHONON SMB-01 is engineered for the purist who demands absolute control over their acoustic environment. At its core lies a 40mm driver unit featuring a revolutionary "Free Edge" structure. This specific engineering choice minimizes energy loss during diaphragm movement, allowing the headphones to reproduce the entire high-resolution spectrum with remarkable clarity. The tuning behind this unit was overseen by a seasoned mastering engineer, ensuring that whether you are listening to classical symphonies or complex electronic tracks, the balance remains faithful to the original recording. If your primary goal is best over ear headphones for study where you need to isolate yourself from the world while analyzing every nuance of a track, this dynamic driver approach offers a focused, detailed presentation.
What truly sets this model apart is its modularity. Unlike most headphones that lock you into a single sonic signature, the SMB-01 allows for interchangeable ear plates sold separately. You can install closed-dynamic plates for maximum sound isolation or swap them for semi-open designs to enjoy a more airy, natural sound profile. This versatility means you aren't buying two different pairs of headphones; you are buying one chassis that evolves with your needs. The construction itself feels substantial, utilizing leather, metal, and plastic in a black finish that speaks to its professional pedigree. Being made in Japan adds a layer of confidence regarding build quality and the meticulous attention paid to the cable assembly.

However, this product is not for everyone. The detachable 4-core LR cable with independent ground connections is a feature for those who understand balanced audio signals, but it might be overkill for casual listeners who just want a simple plug-and-play experience. Furthermore, the requirement to purchase separate ear plates means the initial investment goes beyond just the base unit if you want both acoustic modes. If you are looking for something lightweight and forgettable, the 324-gram weight and the intricate nature of the Free Edge structure might feel like too much maintenance. This is a tool for the dedicated listener who treats their audio setup as a serious craft.
The ZRATFWLJMDK Over-Ear Full-Size Planar targets a different demographic entirely: the enthusiast who values speed and spatial accuracy above all else. By adopting a premium orthodynamic planar driver, this headset promises an ultra-fast transient response. In practical terms, this means the sound reacts instantly to changes in the music, eliminating the lag or "smearing" sometimes found in traditional dynamic drivers. The distortion is kept to an ultra-low level, which ensures that the sound remains clean and uniform across all frequencies. This makes it an exceptional choice for anyone seeking best transparency mode headphone for study sessions where hearing the room's acoustics naturally is part of the workflow, or for gamers who need to pinpoint exactly where a sound is coming from in a virtual space.
The design philosophy here is strictly about the signal path. The open-back earcup design is intentional; it creates a wide, natural soundstage that mimics listening to speakers in a room rather than having sound trapped inside your ears. The metal casing provides a durable shell for this sensitive internal technology. A standout feature for desktop users is the 1.5-meter long audio cable. This length offers ample slack for desktop gaming setups or studio production workstations, preventing the cable from pulling on the device when you move around. The L-shaped 3.5mm elbow plug is a thoughtful addition that prevents the cable from bending sharply and breaking when connected horizontally to game consoles or smartphones resting on a desk.
There are significant limitations to consider with this model. Because it is an open-back design, it offers zero noise isolation. If you are trying to use best open ear earbuds for study concepts in a noisy coffee shop or a busy household, this will fail miserably as the sound leaks out and external noise leaks in. It focuses purely on sound quality, making it ideal for passive listening but useless for calls or quick adjustments without reaching for your source device. It requires a quiet, controlled environment to shine, as the lack of active noise cancellation means you must manage your surroundings manually.
• Best for acoustic versatility → PHONON SMB-01: Only this model allows you to physically change the ear cups to alter the sound signature from closed to semi-open.
• Best for speed and detail → ZRATFWLJMDK Over-Ear Full-Size Planar: The planar magnetic driver offers faster transient response and lower distortion than the dynamic driver in the PHONON.
• Best for isolation → PHONON SMB-01: The closed-dynamic option provides true sound isolation, whereas the ZRATFWLJMDK leaks sound due to its open-back design.
• Best for desktop cable management → ZRATFWLJMDK Over-Ear Full-Size Planar: The 1.5-meter cable with the L-shaped plug is specifically designed for horizontal console and PC setups.
• Best for portable focus → PHONON SMB-01: The 324g weight and potential for closed-mode make it more suitable for travel or varied environments than the open-back alternative.
• Best for pure signal purity → ZRATFWLJMDK Over-Ear Full-Size Planar: With no active electronics, microphones, or controls to interfere, it relies solely on the driver and cable for a direct connection.
• Best for studio monitoring flexibility → PHONON SMB-01: The ability to switch between sealed and open configurations gives engineers two tools in one package.
• Best for budget-conscious entry (spec-wise) → ZRATFWLJMDK Over-Ear Full-Size Planar: While we do not list prices, the simpler construction without modular plates suggests a different value proposition compared to the Japanese-engineered modularity.
I would buy the PHONON SMB-01 if my primary use case involves studying in varying environments where I need to toggle between deep focus isolation and a more open, relaxed listening mode. The ability to upgrade the ear plates later is a forward-thinking feature that extends the life of the product, and the Japanese craftsmanship implies a level of durability I trust. However, if I am locked to a single desk for gaming or mixing and never leave that spot, I would choose the ZRATFWLJMDK Over-Ear Full-Size Planar for its superior speed and expansive soundstage. Ultimately, for best over ear headphones for study, the PHONON SMB-01 wins because it adapts to your noise levels, whereas the ZRATFWLJMDK demands you control your environment first.
The PHONON SMB-01 with its closed-dynamic ear plates offers sound isolation, making it suitable for blocking distractions. The ZRATFWLJMDK has an open-back design and does not block external noise.
