The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies adult-type diffuse gliomas into three primary groups: glioblastoma, IDH-wildtype; astrocytoma, IDH-mutant; and oligodendroglioma, IDH-mutant and 1p/19q-codeleted. While models of the first two groups are available, there have been very few models of IDH-mutant, 1p/19q-codeleted oligodendroglioma.

About four years ago, we were asked to develop a model of IDH-mutant, 1p/19q-codeleted oligodendroglioma, an effort generously funded by the OligoNation Foundation. What initially sounded like an “easy” task quickly became a multi-year challenge involving the optimization of genetic targets, fidelity to the human disease, and much more.

Through perseverance, collaboration, and a lot of hard work, we are thrilled to share that this work has now been published in Neuro-Oncology! The early online print can be found using this LINK. 

Congratulations to first author Ipsita Kundu, the entire lab team, and our collaborators for their tremendous contributions to this work. We are excited to see how this new model can help advance oligodendroglioma research. And we celebrated in the lab with some cake!

Our summer undergraduate CRSP (Cancer Research Scholar Program) student, Izzy, presented the research she completed in our lab this summer!

Over the course of the program, Izzy gained hands-on experience with a wide range of techniques, from DNA cloning to assisting with projects across the lab. Considering this was her first experience working in a research laboratory, she did an outstanding job and was a fantastic addition to the team.

Drs. Phoenix and Reel attended the 22nd International Symposium on Pediatric Neuro-Oncology in beautiful Sydney Australia! We got to present our work from the lab, connect with colleagues and explore Sydney. 

Dr. Sarah Reel celebrated the completion of her pediatric hem-onc fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital! The lab came out to support Sarah on this momentous occasion - truly her las day of school!

Ipsita completed in the 3MT (3-Minute Thesis) competition talking about her oligodendroglioma model, and was the People's Choice recipient! Great job Ipsita!
