Shifting
Here we have types, methods, and lessons that our weyr uses.
There are 4 main types of shift, with one, the fantasy shift, being the most disputed.
Many shifters use what is called the PhMP method, or (Ph)antom (M)ental (P)hysical method.
Here we have types, methods, and lessons that our weyr uses.
There are 4 main types of shift, with one, the fantasy shift, being the most disputed.
Many shifters use what is called the PhMP method, or (Ph)antom (M)ental (P)hysical method.
First, what is shifting?
Shifting is the act of changing or transforming some part yourself. There are many kinds of shifting, from Mental shifting (changing the mind) to Phantom shifting (changing the perceived body state/energetic shape) to Physical shifting (changing one's physical form). We call these stages Ph-shifting, M-shifting, and P-shifting for short. Some will even shorten these to just Ph, M, or P, or combine them all into the term PhMP.
What is the PhMP method?
The PhMP method has two definitions; an actual method towards voluntary shifting, and a description of what shifters experience.
Do Subliminals/Spells work?
Yes and no. Can a spell or subliminal MAKE you nonhuman? No. Can a spell or subliminal help with ambient energy or mental shifting? Yes. End of story.
Can anyone physically shift/grow wings?
No. Becoming nonhuman isn't possible, and not everyone can physically shift or grow wings.
Can otherkin and therians physically shift?
Often times, no. Otherkin and therians may be physically nonhuman, and able to shift or grow wings, but being otherkin or therian does NOT make you physically nonhuman.
Do fictional species shifters exist? (Ie. Pokemon shifters, MH creatures)
No.
Do nekomimi/cat eared nonhumans exist?
Sort of. But not how you imagine them. Kitsune, in folklore, as well as documented by some physical kitsune, an "inbetween" or fox-eared, fox-tailed humanoid form does exist. However, this seems to be a kitsune-only trait, and the ears are not grown.
How long does controlled / voluntary shifting take?
For most people, controlling shifts often takes a year or more. How long shifting takes to happen, is also variable. In my (Lanuea's) experience, it took roughly 30 minutes to an hour for my second uncontrolled shift to be completed.
Is shifting painful?
Very.
Does shifting ever stop being painful?
Nope.
What is the difference between a controlled and uncontrolled shift?
Also called involuntary and voluntary shifts, the difference is simple - Involuntary shifts are not your choice and can happen randomly or due to a trigger.
What could be a shifting trigger?
Shifting triggers can and do vary between nonhumans - it also seems to be effected by what type of nonhuman you are. The most "common" (It's sometimes hard to consider them common, as not every shifter has a shift trigger) shift triggers are fight or flight and M-flares. A trigger, theoretically, could be anything; Sex, thunderstorms, energy, chocolate.. well, hopefully not chocolate. But I'm sure you get the idea.
F-shifting is mostly used by Mermaids and Avians, and in it's old definition, unnecessary.
This shift is often described as when you research for your desired form, draw and visualise the form you wish to achieve, as well as writing down the changes you hope to see in your personality as you continue shifting.
This is, however, flawed, as you cannot chose your shifted form, and you cannot become a shifter.
A true, good "f-shift" is one where you research and understand your shifted form and it's biology. It helps a lot to understand the biology, anatomy, and structure when learning to voluntarily shift.
Ph-shifting is when you cause yourself to have phantom sensations, as if you're fully p-shifted, but you are not.
This shift can be performed by anyone, not just nonhumans.
Like F-shifting, many weres and other shifters argue that this is not a real shift, as anyone can do it.
M-shifting is where you shape and mold your mind to allow your animalistic or humanoid side to come out.
M-shifting is an immersive shift in which you actively let out your instincts and sometimes lose some rational thought. It is permanent, though anyone (even humans) can m-shift.
P-shifting is the "final" shift, where you actually physically become your animal side. Voluntary shifting can take years to accomplish, and even experienced shifters can have trouble voluntarily shifting.
These lessons are the ones taught in the Weyr.
Inspiration, this is now the first stage of the shift. It is the first and only part that you still have the opportunity to back out after you complete this. Anything after this is going to change you one way or another forever. Do not worry now though.
This part of the shift is actually very simple. Something that most people commonly do. You need to research the information on the animal you are, and then you need to take the information that you need out of that.
You simply need to learn from it so that you know the important things about your animal that will make the shift easier. You should gather the information on your own.
First, you need to learn the anatomy of the animal. This is very important for visualising during the p-shift stage. If you don't know how the skeleton of your shifted form will work, how will you visualise it? How will you be able to shift into it?
Second, You need to gather: Instincts, habits, etc. Anything that determines the animal's mind. You need to understand how the instincts of your animal work, and their body language, as well as their rationale. That is necessary for the M-shift.
If there is certain information that you do not have, that is alright. Since you are already a shifter, then you already have everything about the animal inside you, the key is just to unlock it. The more information the easier the shift will work.
Then you need to get inspiration to shift. Many shifters gain this inspiration from the Calls they experience. You should be excited to shift, like you are finally becoming a part of yourself that was missing. This will ready you for the next stage of shifting, M-shifting. Make sure you do not forget these things, keep them in your mind, or record them somewhere you can easily re-access it.
You should make a report about your findings for your own journal or diary. This should include everything already listed as well as the following:
the form you believe yourself to have
Anatomy references (applicable even to dragons)
Specific adaptations (for winged creatures, research flight and flight mechanics)
And links to all of your sources, so you can check back and read more if necessary.
Mental shifting is a useful shift often needed to p-shift properly, as it prepares the mind for the physical shift. M shifting can be practiced by anyone, but it is a permanent life change - when an m shift is done correctly, you will always have it with you. You often see therians and otherkin claiming to m shift, but that it fades and never returns without being forced - this is not a proper m shift.
What happens if you do not m-shift? Well, nothing. Many shifters do not overtly use m shifting, yet they can still shift. This line is blurred as when shifted, they still claim to experience enhanced instincts, which is what the m shift is for.
Mental Shifting is a permanent life change when you do it properly, if you are ready to take this step we will continue. If not, click off of this page.
M shifting has three basic types - Passive, Basic, and the M flare. Knowing the difference between these types is essential.
Passive
The passive m shift is what we would describe as normalization. Since you were born, you have been taught to accept that you are human, that shapeshifting is impossible, that dragons, werewolves, mermaids, vampires, etc. do not exist. These learned beliefs can be hard to undo, that is why they need to be normalized.
Normalization is done in multiple ways, from having a room based around the habitat you would live in, to having your lockscreen as your shifter type, etc. These things help the brain slowly ease into the fact that you are not human and your society is wrong. The Passive M Shift is anything that reminds you that you are nonhuman. It is a slow and rather weak form of the m shift.
Basic
The Basic M shift is what the old Razgriz methods were based on. A controlled setting where you bring out these instincts to mentally become your animal - essentially, you are not looking at your animal, you are looking through your shifted form. This is the most widely practiced form of m-shifting.
M-Flare
The M flare is an often uncontrolled, sudden take over of instincts. These always tend to come at the worst times, ie. sitting in class. In a building, you will feel like a caged animal. You will have urges to run free, to escape, to cry out for others of your kind.
M flares can be dangerous, but they range in severity. Although trying to quantify a shift is next to impossible, the average m flare is around 70% instinct and 30% human rationality - this is often due to the circumstances around you at the time of the flare. a total, 100% instinct flare is rare, even when shifted you will still have the majority of your rationality.
M flares can also be controlled, activated and stopped with triggers - finding these triggers happens often by chance. For some it is a song, for others the feeling of crunching leaves under your feet, it depends on each individual.
How to M shift is complicated, as everyone has their own methods. The median however seems to be visualising seeing life through that of your shifted form and being well, an animal. This seems to have the most success, and it will be the base we use for our lesson, until you all figure out your own method.
To M shift using the basic visualisation method, you will want to let your mind create the scene, and open your eyes to yourself as your shifted form. Explore your new surroundings, taste the air, smell everything, walk, run, swim, or fly - your visualisation is yours to explore. As you do this, you will start to feel your thoughts muddying into sounds that you may start to not recognise, or they will become slower, as your mind starts to change and instinct becomes your driving factor.
In a few days, we will have a quiz posted over what you have read just now.
Until then, you should do the following:
M shift using the visualisation method above
Do one thing to aide a passive m shift
Try to create your own method that works best and is quickest for you.
Record progress daily or every other day including when you feel instincts emerge randomly and uncontrolled.
Your diary of m shift experiences will be very useful as you continue your shifting journey.
Overview
Physical shifting is the most sought after and hardest to accomplish shift. Controlled shifting takes years of effort, and some shifters never can control their shifts. P-shifting is
Types of P-shifting
P-shifting has a few main types. Controlled, Uncontrolled, Partial, and Passive.
Controlled p-shifting is
A lot of these shifting methods are old (<2014) and as a result a lot of them don't mention certain aspects we now know affect shifting, like the passive m-shift. Some of them even mention the wrong idea of Point Of No Return, or PNR. The majority of these methods are here for archival reasons, although you may find that an older method works better for you than a newer method.
F-shifting is the act of creating or uncovering the form you will shift into. F-shifting is also research into what you shift into.
Below are excerpts from many websites on what F-shifting is and how it is conducted. Each website or author is credited.
In many shifter communities, it is debated whether or not F-shifting is real, or needed. Arguments against f-shifting being real is that Werewolves, dragons, and other shifters don't need to learn every little detail about their animal before they shift. Many shift without knowing anything about their animal. And for dragons, there is no 100% proven research about dragons, so any "research" one could conduct during an F-shift would be shotty at best.
Avians even tend to believe F-shifting/research is unneeded, as if you are wingedkin/aviankin, your body already knows how wings work and what to grow.
However, I have still compiled some guides from other sites. All of these can be modified to fit any species, even though they are directed at merfolk.
F-shifting guides for Merfolk
Fantasy Shift (F-Shift) : Basically this is just Visualization and Meditation. You really have to Imagine yourself as a mermaid. It really helps you to think what your mermaid looks like, what the water against your skin will feel like.
Take a piece of paper and write things down like, my hair will have this colour and do that also with your eyes and mouth. And draw yourself, how you will look like as mermaid. You need this for your physical shift. Also, write down where you live as a mermaid.
Before we can even think about shifting, we first must do the research. I know, I know, this doesn't sound like the most fun thing to do. However, researching that which you are trying to become is very important... and therefor, it is best to start here (even if you think you already know everything there is to know about mermaids!).
To start off your research, you're going to need to draw a picture. Just draw a mermaid- it doesn't have to be perfect, just make sure it establishes everything you think a mermaid would have. Top or no top? Gills or lungs? Scales or skin like a dolphin? Those sorts of things. This drawing should be done before any of your research... and have fun with it! Bring in some things you think it would be cool for a mermaid to have, or things that you would want as a mermaid. Save this drawing somewhere, or keep it with you while you research, you're going to need it!
Now that we have that established, its time to get down to the hard stuff. It is best to know everything you can possibly find out about mermaids, fish, anatomy, and so on. You won't be JUST researching mermaids, you need to know some basic science principles about humans and fish (or dolphins, depending on what you base your tail on looking like) so that you can begin building your mermaid. Also, you're going to have to figure out what environment you will be swimming in. If you live near lakes, then your mermaid would probably have a darker tail color, lungs instead of gills, and would be a freshwater mermaid. However, if you live next to a coral reef, then your mermaid might have a bright tail color, gills, and would be a salt water mermaid. It all really depends on the environment. This sounds like a lot, doesn't it? Well just wait, theres even more. To help, here are some things you may want to know or find out:
What would your mermaid eat?
How would diet effect your mermaids body?
Salt water or regular water?
How would a tail be structured to help a mermaid survive best?
What color would the tail be, given the environment?
Aside from the tail, what other characteristics would a mermaid have?
Gills or large lungs?
Aside from 'covering you up,' what would the purpose of a top be?
What would be the best design for a top?
Would your physical appearance change? Hair color or eye color for example?
How do mermaids act? What science or species could you base that off of? (This question is super important, make sure to look into it in detail!)
How to mermaids drink water? Osmosis or regular? (hint- Salt water fish usually drink lots of water, fresh water fish usually absorb it through osmosis)
Where do you plan to live for most of your life? Perhaps you live near a lake now, but plan to spend most of your life on the ocean. This effects your mermaid.
What about skin color? What skin color would be best for your mermaids environment?
Awkward, but how do mermaids... "relieve" themselves?
How are mermaid social? Do they live in groups or alone?
Do mermaid migrate?
Anything else you can think of....
As you can see, thats a LOT. I've probably even left off some things you may want to think about, but these are just some basic questions you're going to want to know. Luckily for you, I've included a section in this site that will help answer some of these questions... but remember, the answers are from my own research and perspective! Don't base your mermaid solely off of what I thought. Remember, every answer to these questions has a dramatic effect on what your mermaid will look like!
Now, look back at your original drawing.... does it look very scientific anymore? It probably doesn't, but if it does, good for you! Anyway, it's time to draw again. Basing this next drawing off of your first drawing and the data you have collected, try drawing another mermaid. Make it as accurate as you can, while trying to keep some of the parts that you originally liked about it. Make sure that this new mermaid is both pleasing to you, but would also survive easily. This is the basis of your mermaid species.
Step One: The Research:
Step One of becoming a mermaid, is the step where you research and learn about mermaids, what you are going to be. You are going to learn about what you are going to become, a mermaid.
Step Two: Learning about your mermaid self:
Step Two of becoming a mermaid, is the step where you learn about how you, specifically, are going to be. You are going to refer to your mermaid research (Step One) and plan how you will be as a mermaid. Learning about yourself you need to get personal, and find out how a mermaid lifestyle will affect you.
Step Three: Preparation for shifting:
Step Three of becoming a mermaid, is the step where you prepare for shifting. After you have connected to your inner mermaid, you need to prepare yourself for the shifting journey.
Step Four: Fantasy Shifting:
Step Four of becoming a mermaid, is the first part of the real shifting. This part is mainly about meditation and visualization. Fantasy shifting, also known as F-shifting, incorporates all the steps you've seen so far, particularly Step Three.

Fantasy Shifting is like creating a character for a story. So for you creative minds out there, you may want to grab a piece of looseleaf, and a sketchbook, because we're going to have a bit of fun with this. Basically, you are creating you as a mermaid. You know in those spells where it says "Give me a pink tail with Hydrokinesis etc etc etc." Well this is basically that part. You create what you are going to look like as a mermaid, what you eat, where you live, etc. So let's begin!
Take a piece of looseleaf (or just regular paper.) and write down "Hair Color, Tail Color, Eye Color, Skin Color." This is your physical appearance, what you are going to focus on when you Physical Shift. For example, it will look something like this:
Hair Color : White
Tail Color : Pink
Eye Color : Green
Skin Color : Pale Blue
These things will contribute as camouflage in your environment. You may want to add details like , " Small fluke at the bottom, side fins." or "gills on the neck" even things like "Elf ears." Some vital things, like a thin, transparent, layer over the eyes to protect you while swimming, or your tail shape and form will be important. Will your tail be for speed or complex for camouflage? These things you focus on when you are shifting, so you bring them out. Remember, start with smaller things when you begin to shift. Don't automatically start to try and shift your tail. Start by shifting your eyes or your hair first.
Next, you can decide where you want to live when you are a mermaid. Do you live in the deep sea? Are you a traveler? Do you live in a lake? Or do you live in the tropical waters of Aruba? It's all up to you. What do you eat? Do you stick to mainly fruits and other small things you can find on land? Or do you hunt and catch fish? How will your diet shape your tail? Are you a land dweller, and live half on land and in the sea?
Now take out a blank piece of paper. Draw what you look like as a mermaid. Visualize it. Hang it somewhere where you will see it every day. Fantasy Shifting really takes the Fantasy element to a level because it's creating in your head what you want to be.

Ph-shifting or Phantom Shifting is a shift in which you feel the parts of your animal/shifted form but they are not really there. These phantom sensations help with p-shifting.
Ph-shifting can be achieved by anyone, so it is not shifter-exclusive. Otherkin, therians, and even humans without animal souls/past lives can learn to phantom shift.
That said, phantom shifting often happens involuntarily.
How to Ph-shift:
(Lanuean's phantom shifting method)
Step 1: Get into a comfortable position and close your eyes. Count to 50 while breathing in and out with every number. Start to meditate.
Step 2: Once you're meditating and are calm, visualise the parts of your animal form (like horns, ears, tail, claws, etc.) forming on your body. Watch them pull themselves out of your body and exist. You should feel tingles and itchiness where the parts should be.
Step 3: Feel the bones and joints of parts that have them, such as wings or your tail. Feel each joint and move it, you should feel as if you actually have a tail and it is actually moving.
Step 4: The big part, visualise the rest of your body changing, like being covered in fur or scales, and feel every scale, every piece of fur, move and grow. You should be able to feel the fur/scales/etc move when you move.
And there you go! open your eyes, see you haven't p-shifted, but you feel all the parts of your animal, and you've successfully phantom shifted.
It is possible to phantom shift permanently, and cause permanent phantom limbs, however it can be detrimental to your mental state and energy.
Other Ph-shiftingsnippets:
Ph-shift: Phantom shift.
This type of shifting gets a lot of results, and is one thing that a lot of P shifters use to get them ready for shifting (talk about that down there). This is where you literally feel what the mermaid tail (and top, maybe) will feel like. You dont officially HAVE the tail, but the energy surrounding you lets you feel the tail as if it where actually there. A good example would be to, say, pinch a part of your arm. After you pinch it, wait a few seconds, and then imagine feeling that pinch on your arm again. You may not actually feel it, but at the same time, you might.

M-shifting is the act of shifting your mental state into that of your animal. You aren't looking at the animal, you are looking THROUGH the animal and letting your instincts run wild. Like F and Ph-shifting, anyone can mentally shift, but for P-shifters, M-shifting can be a huge help towards the process. Many p-shifters successfully m-shift without knowing it, or they may be born with the instincts showing. Due to this, some argue that M-shifting is fake, or unneeded.
M-shifting is a permanent shift. Once you successfully complete an M-shift, there is no going back. You cannot remove your animal mind anymore. You and your animal side will be perfectly split.
M-flares are when the animal comes out for a while, and there isn't a perfect split, or you voluntarily let your animal instincts take over over your human ones.
M-shifting is a big step and can take months of practice to perform a successful m-shift.
Lanuean's M shift method
To m-shift I use a rather simple (to me) method.
This method has allowed me to m-shift and m-flare a few times. Most of my m-flares are spontaneous but this has helped bring one on before, and strengthen my instincts after ~2 years of pushing them away.
Step 1 : Get into a comfortable position in a dark room and close your eyes.
Step 2 : Count backwards from 100 down to 0, picturing the sun (your human thoughts, ideas, and rationalism) going down past the horizon and bringing on the night (your animal side, instincts, will to hunt). This step may take a while, but as you count down, push away human thoughts. if they come, count over them. After a while, the numbers should start to sound foreign as you think of your animal side and its instincts, and bring them out as the night begins to rise.
Step 3 : Once you have reached zero and the numbers sound like pointless noises, let your mind take you to a new place. A forest, for example, if you're a wolf or a deer. In that new place, continue looking through your animal. Let your mind and instincts take you. Do you see prey? Chase it. Hunt it. Catch it. Run free, be free.
You are an animal, not human. Be free.

Khaosdog's M-Shift
Before you read this I would like to say when I first began shifting this guide is what got me going. ~ Ice Fang
I know a lot of you have been having trouble M-shifting or "Mental" Shifting. For those of you who are, you've come to the right place.
I have been M-shifting for as long as I can remember and its helped me to get to a p-shift. Now if you want to M-shift, heres some ways I do it and it helps
A word of advice, it helps to have a big imagination.
Method 1
Go to a place in your area thats as wooded and nature filled as possible and hang out there for a little bit, regaurdless of weather, go there and just imagine yourself as your wolf. Run through trees, pant, chase small animals and birds, whatever, just get yourself into that state of mind where you feel like you ARE the wolf, imagine yourself running on all fours and get in the habbit of standing on your tippy toes. This is a great way to shift.
Method 2
Another thing that helps me is I observe dogs. Dogs are as closely related to wolves as domestic animals get. So why not copy their movements and actions? If your dog yawns (they usually yawn with their tounges wide out) yawn like that, your dog barks or is alerted to sounds, do that. Act with your dog, heck walk on all fours like it! It may looks silly but it'll all work out in the long run (and I bet your pooch will like the idea of its master acting like it ) I do this with my dog and it really helps me get into shift
Method 3
This way is not so much moving around, but it is deep concentration. Before school each day I hide in a bathroom stall(because its quiet in the mornings) and just imagine myself AS the wolf, I close my eyes and picture my arms and hands as paws and forelegs, I picture a long snout in front of me and having a tail, that way if your at school, work, etc you'll still have your shift and it'll increase your chances of getting your physical shift faster.
Thats all I can think of right now, but if I think of more I will update this. Hope this helps you guys!

Shortwolf's M-Shifting Guide
Part I
The first and my favorite type of M-shift is to shift your mind over while your body is still fully human. You can preform this type of M-shift while doing anything anywhere because all it is is thinking/acting like a wolf (there are restrictions. read below...)
The first stage is to react to things like a wolf would. Like when someone walks in the room sit/stand higher or lower considering who it is. Like if its someone you really don't like or trust, sit higher. Also, when someone makes you mad, physically growl. Consider your body language and pay close attention to it. Do things like that. The second stage is when you begin to stop thinking with words, and start thinking with emotions/colours/sounds, whatever. So, if you get angry, don't rant in your head, instead just recognize the anger and let it run through your mind and body like loud red lava so that you can feel the energy you get from it and the energy that you give to it. Happiness for me is generally yellow warm and the sounds that go through my mind will change depending on different things. Sadness is blue and cold, it is silent. Then there are mixed emotions that I can "see". Its very interesting. The third stage when you hit the hightened senses. Pay close attention to what you hear (outside of your head this time), what you see from the corners of your eyes, what you smell, what you feel (as in like temperature and such things like that). I also find that I have extra feelings too - like when there's other things in the room - people, animals - I can like feel them there, and the emotion that they are feeling. The fourth stage, is hightened instincts. Like i know that we all have hightened insticts to begin with, but these instincs aren't wrong or guesswork at all, and it is basically impossible to ignore them. I don't have much more information on this stage yet... The fifth stage, I'm guessing, is the stage that you reach when you p-shift. I have never made it very far into the fourth stage, so I can't tell you much about this one. This is just a guess...
In order to stop the beginning stages of this m-shift you simply do what you did before in a reverse sort of way. For stage one, you just go back to acting like a human. For stage two you first start thinking with words again, then start acting like a human... Of course, for the higher stage that you reach, the harder it is to get back to the human way of thinking. If you find that you can't get back for some reason or another you do exactly what you do to get out of a p-shift. Go to sleep. I must warn you though, like Blaze has said, once you begin m-shifting, your mind will never be the same again. And another warning is that depending on how well your brain is functioning at that time (which can depend on sleep, food, water, ect...), and how much practice you've had, while in the higher stages you may or may not be able to function around humans so just keep that in mind.
The second type of M-shift that I know about is the 'meditation' type shift.
With this shift, you basically sit down somewhere and imagine that you are shifting. The difference between imagining it and actually m-shifting this way is that you can actually feel yourself shifting physically with this one. The things is, you can feel a shift, but your physical body doesn't actually change. Its all in your mind, thus making it an m-shift. This is a very effective way to practice p-shifting before you p-shift. The trick to this is to make sure that you don't relax. In order to actually p-shift (and I got this information from pretty much every forum that tells you have to p-shift) you have to relax. If you don't relax, then you just form an m-shift. To get out of this m-shift you pretty much just pull yourself out - a lot like waking up from a very intense dream.
The third type of M-shifting is what I notice that most people do.
This type also takes place in your mind. This is the type of m-shift that involves you imagining yourself as a wolf where you look THROUGH the wolves eyes and go to your territory in your head. I haven't done much experimenting with this type of a shift because I've been working on the top one, so if you want details on it you can ask Icy from Razgriz, or I think someone on Recolitus has posted about it a bit.
AND ANOTHER THING:
M-shifting is, of course, mental shifting. So, your goal is to think like a wolf. It makes p-shifting a lot easier and protects from PNR, so I think that everyone should practice it. Prior to popular belief, you don't actually need to get away from people to practice M-shifting... well, you do if you want to reach a high level, but that doesn't mean that you can't practice lower levels to make higher levels easier to obtain.... Anyway, here's a bit that I know about m-shifting.
First off, I found that it helps (with any level of m-shifting), to think without words. Start thinking with emotions and use things like colours and sounds to provide the right thoughts in your head. Its kind of hard to explain, but it is a fairly simple concept to understand.
Secondly, it helps to react to what people do the way a wolf would. Like if someone attempts to mess with you by stealing something from you, growl at them. If someone takes a grab at your food, snap at them. Be respectful, and trustworthy... and so on and so fourth. This will most likely take some research on the behavior of your animal.
Thirdly, I know that things are crazy at razgriz, but Blaze, as well as some others, did post some nice information on m-shifting, so it would probably be in your best interest to seek that out if you haven't already and you want to improve your m-shift. That and be sure to read what has been posted on this site on the topic.
Last, as we all know, practice makes perfect. As we all also know, m-shifting can be practiced on a day to day basis, anytime, anywhere.
If anyone has any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask.

XfangX's M-Shifting Guide
I have recently noticed that everyone who has M-Shifted or knows about M-Shifting has posted a topic on it
I figured that I better contribute my method.
DISCLAIMER: I know that this method may not work for everyone, I also know that some may dissagree with my method if you are one of those people this is ment to be a topic to help members who haven shifted yet, for their sake please keep your opinions and petty dissagreements to yourself
I start out by meditation, it focuses you and slowes your mind for those unfarmilar with the prosses I supose I better say something start by relaxing every muscle in your body, then breath deeply, stop thinking its pretty much impossible to stop thinking all togeather so just count, fast at first but then count only to the rythems of your breths dont let any words cross your mind and if they do start over counting quickly at first then slow it down after you have gotten to 100 without thinking human thoughts (only the numbers) through your minds eye take yourself some where else a forest or a jungle build a world around you hear the birds, feel the ground beneath your paws, smell the damp earth, look throgh you wolf eyes (or tiger or lion or whatever) start exploring slowly at first just wander around smelling things and lisnting. dont let any human words or thoughts enter your mind. do whatever comes to mind find others explore go hunting eat drink sleep anything a wolf would do in the wild after a couple strong m-shifts you will start to feel like you belong, right before I started P-Shifting I had gotten to the point where my m-shifts where my sanctuary I knew that I was the wolf and that the wolf was me I became what i had always wanted to be. in my m-shifts it was like i was compleat like I had found a part of myself that I never knew I was missing. it is at this point that you can start P-Shifting. in your M-Shift go to where you feel most comfertable under your favorite tree or on a rock in the sun. Curl up in a ball or lay over on your side any comfortable positon that reminds you of your wolf self do this both in your M-Shift and in your physical form then imagine yourself changing feel your teeth paws tail ears fur.
Become a wolf
DONT STOP, NEVER GIVE UP!
It will (and I cannot stress this enoughf) take a very long time, it isnt instant practice, practice, practice,
and you will acheive.

Part 2: Merfolk and Avian methods
While the above methods work for shifters such as wolves, dragons, deer, etc. Avian, Merfolk, etc methods are a little different, and deserve their own section.
KM's Mermaid Mental shift
Alright! Hopefully, so far everything for you guys has been going smoothly. Unfortunately, M-Shifting is not as easy or strait forward as meditations or research. Lets view M-shifting as a big fence. Once you climb over it, its going to be really hard to climb back out again. Likewise, once you M-shift your mind and soul into that of a mermaids... its going to be really hard to go back to normal living. The ocean (or water in general) will call to you. You will be changed emotionally, mentally, and hopefully physically once you get to P-shifting. Therefor, it is my job to warn you right now that becoming a mermaid may not be the best thing for you. If you don't live next to a body of water like a ocean or lake... then what? Are you just going to sit in a bathtub looking at your tail for the next few years of your life? Like I said, the shifting method does not give you powers. Powers are something that you can get, but probably not from shifting (although if you would like to try with the shifting method, be my guest). Because of these two traits, it could be that you just want to be a mermaid because you want to be something special. A lot of us feel that way too, you're not alone... but please, just pause and ask yourself if you really want this. With that note of warning, lets begin your next step... M-shifting.
M-Shifting, as was cleared up before hand, is basically changing your mind and attitude to that of a mermaid. Unfortunately, mermaids are half way humans, and therefor don't really have an animal instinct or anything that you could draw from. Luckily for you however, if you've been following these lessons, then you now have a nice idea of how fish and dolphins act, and how your mermaid looks and acts. All of that is really important, because there is no set version of a mermaid. So, remember that mermaid drawing and research you did? Get all of that out and go over it now. It may be apparent to you, but I'm pretty sure everyone is going to come up with their own ideas and needs for what a mermaid IS, and so each and every person trying the shifting method needs to really look into behavior (i.e., a tropical mermaid that has lots of food resources and not many predators might have a different behavior then an arctic mermaid who is always looking for food. Likewise, a lake mermaid may eat and act differently in their confined space, than an ocean mermaid that has everywhere in the world) . Of course, you should have already done all of this, but if you haven't for whatever reason, then its REALLY good for you to do that right now.
So. Once you have this mermaid thing all down, its time to start applying it into your life. That means, that every day you will make a conscious effort to act more and more like a mermaid would act. Like I said, this may be hard, and I do have some ideas for you in the Tips and Ideas section. Remember however, that those are my personal views of mermaids. They may not apply to where you live or anything like that. Just be careful. Anyway, back to the M-shifting... you'll need to really change your life a lot. This is important, because it gets you used to this type of living, lets your mind draw out your inner mermaid, and connects you to the ocean and its spirit in a way that you may not have been before. Of course, simply acting like a mermaid isn't the only thing that you need to do to M-shift.
Because this method is known as Metaphysical Shifting, there is obviously some other parts to it than just pure shifting. The metaphysical aspects of it mean doing meditations, balancing and learning to move energy, and connecting to the ocean or the element water. To conserve space, I have added a few of these things in the Tips and Ideas section, which you really should check out. While these things are not necessary to pure shifting, they are very helpful.
Good luck with M-shifting, and consider it as if you were stepping through a gateway. From the moment you finally "get over that fence," you are now regarded, somewhere inside of you, as a mermaid.
M-flaring
The mental flare... I think may be one of the most fun, and easy, aspects of shifting (until you actually shift physically, that is!) For a recap, mental flaring is basically letting your mermaid mind take over completely. Out of all of my shifting, I've also found that the mermaid M-Flare is one of the easiest to accomplish. There is just something about the water covering your up, or the sun shining through the top of the water, or the warm sand pressing against your back that just makes the Mental Flare something magickal. So, how do we do it?
The first thing I would pay attention to is how you look at the moment. If you are wearing jeans with your hair tied up in a pony tail and a t-shirt... well, thats not very mermaidish. However, being in your bathing suit with your hair down, shells adorning your body, and maybe some water proof makeup will probably make you feel a lot more like a mermaid away from home. For right now, don't even worry too much about if the accessories are accurate, or if mermaids ever wear makeup (they probably don't) or anything like that. Right now, you are just trying to feel like you are one! Another thing that helps so much is a fake mermaid tail or monofin. I have both, and believe me, it really makes you feel one with the water. Unfortunately, it also make you feel one with an empty wallet! Mermaid tails and monofins can be very expensive, especially if you have big feet like myself, and are forced into buying the $80, larger monofin, instead of the smaller ones that cost around $30-$50. Also, the materials can cost a lot.... or, if you buy one from a website, the whole tail can cost a lot as well! To help with this mermaid dilemma, I have included some links at the bottom of the page- along with my views of them- to help you get your first fake tail. Take note, that while you do not need a fake tail to M-Flare, it is strongly suggested that you have one.... they're fun, and help with the experience!
Now, the second super important thing to a Mental Flare would probably be your location. If you're just sitting on your bed in the middle of the night, or at school or something, then an M-Flare might be a little difficult. Remember- mermaids SWIM. They are meant to be submersed in water, swimming freely among their environment. So, while sitting in your bathtub may be a little bit better than sitting on your bed... well, its still not very good. For M-Flaring, I would suggest making your way to a pool, a lake, or even an ocean! My personal suggestion would be a nice salt water pool... there is a lot less harmful chlorine, its a lot more like the ocean, and you can open your eyes underwater! Further, there is room to swim, but its not as dangerous as the ocean or as dirty as a lake. Of course, on the down side... its not as natural. So, a good thing to do would be to have a mixture of each. If your mermaid is a lake mermaid, then I would try fresh water pools and ponds, and also swimming in the lake a lot. If you are an ocean mermaid, then I would try salt water pools and the oceans... but be careful. The ocean can have strong tides and currents, which are easily over come for mermaids, but not for humans. So, when swimming in the ocean, just make sure that you are at a very shallow or safe area before swimming. Also, if you are swimming with your fake mermaid tail, I would suggest having someone watch over you, just to make sure nothing bad happens. A dead human would not make a very good mermaid!
Alright, now that you've got the two most important things all out of the way, its time for you to actually start M-flaring! While you can do small M-Flares anywhere, I would suggest setting a day aside just to M-Flare. You won't be like that all day long, but it would be a day to be... especially mermaid-like. For instance, that morning, you would wake up... and instead of taking a shower, you could take a bath and light a candle. Or, you could take a shower and use some body wash that reminds you of the ocean. While getting ready for the day, you could put on some water proof make up that makes you look like a mermaid... in your view at least. Do your hair with beach waves, or strait. Just have fun with it, there is not right or wrong! You could wear shells, and the color of your tail with a bathing suit underneath. For breakfast lunch and dinner, you could adjust your diet to that of a mermaids... (whatever you think a mermaid's diet would be! My ideas and thoughts are in the Tips and Ideas section!). Just spend the whole day in a bit of a mermaid daze. Then, when the time comes for you to actually M-Flare, you'll already be halfway there.
So, I would begin in an area that you can sit or even lay down in the water without the water going into your nose, mouth, or eyes. Close your eyes and completely relax. Let the water wash over you, in your physical body. Feel the spirit of the ocean... the spirit of the mermaid washing over with every wave. Let the water draw this mermaid part of you out from your soul, and into your mind. Let your human mind go blank, and let mermaid thoughts and feels sweep through you. Don't worry, you still think, and you'll still need to breath air, and you won't lose yourself. Just change your mind into that of a mermaid. Feel a mermaids cravings, her instincts and thoughts. Finally, get up, and letting the mermaid part of you move you, slip into the water and swim. Remember, you are not swimming like a human. You are using your legs to kick up and down, and you are gracefully rolling through the water. Open your eyes if you can and look around. If you are in a swimming pool, open your eyes and imagine that right before you is coral,or sea weed, or the mucky bottom of a lake. Do not swim at the surface, but go down into the water. Don't worry about breathing; your body will bring you back to the surface and you won't drown. Likewise, don't try to push yourself too much with holding your breath. Just let your body do what it needs to do. I've actually found that in this state, sometimes your lungs won't start to hurt... they won't tell you that you desperately need to breath or anything. You just sit there wondering when you're going to need to come up for air, which usually happens after a while, but it also lets you hold your breath longer. Anyway, just try to enjoy yourself in this state. Be how you think a mermaid would be, in an out of the water. You should come out of your M-Flare feeling whole and connected to your other self.
Have fun!
M-shifting Ideas
I thought this one might come in handy. Because I didn't want to take up too much room with mindless babble, I've created this page to offer some ideas when it comes to M-Shifting. These are some things that can be applied to every day life, or for you to think about when thinking about your mermaids looks and such. Remember, these are all my personal thoughts, and therefor not completely accurate. If anyone has any ideas, comment on this page your thoughts. Here we go!
Diet: I believe mermaids would diffidently have to eat a mixed diet of both fish, shell fish, sea plants and possibly fruit. Now let me explain on this one. For our definition of a “mermaid” to fit the beautiful women with a gorgeous fish tail, we have to find a way to keep the human part of the mermaid looking HUMAN. Now imagine if mermaids only ate meat. That would make them predators, which would alter their appearances greatly. They would probably have more snout like noses, gills for sure, a fast, efficient tail that probably blends into the water (not exactly that gorgeous blue or pink that many of you want). The skin would probably take on a blueish tone, and the teeth would be sharp. For some reason, I dont think most of you want to be that when you think of being a mermaid. However, if a mermaid only ate sea plant life, they might wind up being somewhere at the opposite of the scale and look equally as odd. This puts mermaids in the position of eating a mixed diet, that somewhat mimics what humans eat. I added fruit in the main diet because we want to become mermaids who can walk on land, and therefor, they would probably be able to grab a bit of tropical fruit from the trees and such that tend to live near the water. It is also important that everyone adapt this image to their mermaid as best as possible. Once again, if you live near a lake, your mermaids diet will be different from someone living near the ocean, so on and so forth. So, with this information, we can bring this diet into our own. Try to eat fruit that grows naturally around your mermaids area. Eating shellfish, seaweed, and sushi is also very good too! Try researching the area that you live in, or where your mermaid comes from. See what grows naturally, and how you can incorporate that into every day life.
Habitat- Well, we're back to this one, that seems to pop up everywhere! Your mermaids habitat. Your mermaid's habitat pretty much effects everything about your mermaid's looks, diet, personality, and just about everything else. Therefor, it is very important. So, lets begin with some science. To maintain the upper part of a human, a mermaid would need to be warm blooded I believe. However, they may not be as warm blooded as humans are, due to their fish tail. Given this, a mermaid would be able to survive in some cold areas, but would really thrive in warmer ones. I personally would say that mermaid would thrive the best somewhere in the Caribbean, or in Hawaii. Unfortunately, there are not many of us that are fortunate enough to live in areas like that. So, it would be my guess that most of our mermaids would probably have to migrate in order to stay alive. Take all of this into consideration in how you design your mermaid's fluke and all of that. Is it good for long distance travel? Anyway, while a mermaid's habitat would most likely be some place warm or tropical, we'll just have to adjust ourselves. Some good things that you might want to monitor in your Shifting might be your body temperature (going down would be good), or if you find yourself drawn to warmer places. Likewise, if you live in really cold places, you may find that you can tolerate the cold a lot. Either way, just make sure to monitor physical changes.
Social Behavior- When you imagine a mermaid swimming freely in the ocean, what do you see? Well, you probably don't see that mermaid swimming along in a group of three to six mermaids. However, with the science that I've found, I believe that in "pods" would be exactly how mermaids travel! Take dolphins for example. They are probably one of the closest relatives to the mermaid, and are therefor really good to learn from. Dolphins live in pods, or groups, of three to eight, and usually have some sort of "leader" dolphin. Dolphins have very special and unique bonds with one another, and are said to be closer than some human families. These pods travel together, live together, and stay together for most of their life. So, bringing that into mermaid context, it could be conceivable that mermaids live in groups. How does that effect your M-shift and life? Well, one thing you could do is try to connect with your group or family. Find a group that really understands you, and treat them like your mermaid "pod." It is also very useful to try and find some people in real life (as well as the internet) that actually want to become a mermaid as much as you do, or would at least understand your wish. This can both be supporting to you, and help you with the whole "pod," aspect of life.
Personal Looks- Here is when we get into a touchier subject. It may come to your attention that you may not look like the mermaid that you've drawn out earlier. For instance, if your mermaid were a tropical mermaid, they would probably have tan skin to deal with the sun. If your mermaid lived out in the middle of the ocean, or deeper in the ocean, or maybe even in a lake... then their skin may be paler. Adjusting your looks to that of your mermaid can be very important in an M-shift, and help your mind get used to "changing." Also, (here comes the touchy part) if you are a bit over weight or out of shape, you may want to get that taken care of. One, because its really healthy if you do, and two because think about it... mermaid swimming takes just about every aspect of your muscles, and requires you to be a strong swimmer. The more weight, or the less muscle, the harder it is to swim. I know, I know, it is a hard subject, but believe me it will help your self image... human and mermaid wise!
Regular Behavior- This one is probably the hardest one to figure out, as it has a lot to do with habitat, and with dolphins! As said before in the Social Behavior aspect, I believe mermaids share close bonds with dolphins. I think that if you were to mimic a mermaid, your first thing to do would to be learning from dolphins and other fish. This means being playful, enthusiastic, loving, loyal, and generally good learners. Next comes the habitat. Say your mermaid lives in a very cold region... Well, that may result in your mermaid being "colder" in attitude. Those mermaids would need to focus a lot more on survival than those living in tropical waters. Therefor, if you live in colder areas, you may need to adjust to taking note of your surroundings, and bringing your body into survival mode. However, if you live in warm areas, your mermaid might have playful attributes to it as well. Or, if your mermaid migrates, you may need to be more enduring than the carefree tropical mermaids. So on, and so forth.
While this page is still under construction, I hope that the facts here have been useful! Good luck!

Another Mermaid M-shift
M-SHIFT:
Let's get a little more detailed on your m-shift. It's basically meditation while you think about being a mermaid, going on the beach, etc. With this, (it's not just some tinker bell quote it's real, and it helps so much you wouldn't believe,) You have to BELIEVE that shifting will work, and you will become a mermaid. So here are some meditation techniques that I came up with.
Technique No. 1: (You may wear clothes, this is not a p-shifting technique!)
Lie down on your bed or a specific meditation spot you have. Now imagine yourself lying on a beach, clothed, and right near the waves, so that every time the water rises it washes over you, surrounding you in a peaceful, water cloaked blur. Now each time the waves wash over you, you feel more and more connected to the sea, and slowly, very slowly you start to gain gills and/or expanded lungs, a tail, webbed hands, or anything else you plan on shifting. Once you become a full mermaid you swim into the sea and look back. Find you most valued object (that was made by man, EG a computer, not a shell) And imagine yourself throwing the object into a fire close by where you are. You dive into the sea and feel at one with the sea, with the waves rocking you as you swim, the coral below, the fish, and how beautiful of a world you just entered.
Constant M-shift:
Now if you don't know this, pay attention! A constant m-shift may be hard to maintain, but it sure does help you shift! So what a constant m-shift really is: This is where you use your mermaid 5 senses and try to strengthen them, if you get what i'm saying. So here's how to help with this!
1. Taste: Try to eat seafood a lot, stick to the diet, and feel like you're eating raw fish from the sea, etc.
2. Scent: Maybe get a ocean scented candle or two and light them in your room often, or maybe an ocean scented febreeze scent. Try anything!
3. Touch: Get some sand, from the beach, or a lake, pond, or even a shop. Make a little place/bucket/platter you can scoop up shells and sand in and just feel them, and look them over.
4. Vision. Make a collage near your meditation spot, on a wall, or somewhere near. Make pictures of fish, print out mermaids and such, or come on the website and embrace and learn!
5. Hearing. This may not be achievable for many, but you could go to the beach, or lake, and pretend you are a mermaid already! If you don't have an accessible beach, lake, or pond near you listen to some ocean sounds on youtube, there are plenty! Or maybe get a free app that has sleeping sounds, most have trickling water or beach sounds.

M-shifting for Merfolk
Hello my little turtles! Today your going to get a lesson on "Mental Shifting" in your journey to becoming a mermaid. Mental Shifting is probably the most important step, because it puts you in the right mindset. It can be extremely difficult to adjust to this lifestyle, and takes a lot of effort. But for me, this is probably the most fun! Now there are a few things we need to cover. Visualization, Thinking, Diet, and Personality. Adjusting small things into these 4 concepts can help you be on your way to mastering Mental Shifting! (:
1. Thinking: Thinking like a mermaid, probably the most basic point to Mental Shifting. For example, every day, at the same time, write on a piece of paper 15 times, "I, ______ am a mermaid." Things like that put you into the right mindset. You can also take time during the day, to set aside for some yoga, and say to yourself, "I am a mermaid." Say it enough, and you'll start to believe it.
2. Visualization: Seeing yourself as a mermaid. You can do things as simple as curling your hair, if that makes you feel like a mermaid. Set aside some time to meditate, and imagine yourself as a mermaid, remember what your tail looks like ( Refer to Fantasy Shifting ) and really believe that is you.
3. Diet: Diet is the most fun for me I think. It really makes me feel like I am a mermaid. Sometimes though, and I have experienced it, when your body is adjusting to all these changes, some "human foods" like fast food, can actually make you sick, so be careful. Refer to your Fantasy Shifting. What do you eat as a mermaid? If you eat fruits, try packing an apple for lunch. Eat an orange for breakfast. Go shopping and buy some more exotic fruits like pineapple. If you eat fish, or are an Arctic mermaid, go out and buy some tuna and add more of that to your diet. Little adjustments help.
4. Personality: Before you jump to conclusions, this is not asking you to change your whole persona. This is simply where the "acting" comes in. Act how you would believe a mermaid to act. Even make it a game. See if your friends can guess that you've been "acting" different. See if you can get them to say "Gee, it seems like your a mermaid sometimes hahah." But whatever you do, don't give yourself away, (unless you really trust them.) But this one is the hardest to dedicate to, because sometimes you forget. But things like drinking lots of water, buying a fish from the pet store and talking to it if you have to, anything you feel how a mermaid would indeed act.

P-shifting, physical shifting, the most sought after and most difficult shift to perform.
P-shifting is the final step, actually, physically becoming who you truly are.
P-shifting can take months to years to learn how to control, let alone shift on command.
Even I, Lanuean, cannot control my shifts. But, as always, i've compiled methods from some of the most well known p-shifters to go here, and their sources.
Before we start, the links to the majority of the methods: (all are backed up in case of deletion)
1. Blaze's "School of shifting" Website with many exercise to learn to control shift
Now, onto the actual methods.
Blaze's P-shifting "Handbook"
The big guns, the most well-known modern p-shifting method. Use with caution y'all.
Here it is, the method that I use, and I will go in to as much detail as I can, so that you might get the most reference out of it and have less questions so that you can just straight off shift.
First off, you need to understand that there is a very complex science behind this. No matter what you do, you cannot escape physics. But even with the "limits" of physics, even some amazing unbelievable things can happen. I will answer a few questions that I am commonly asked.
FAQ:
Q: Do you get bigger or smaller when you shift?
A: No, it is not physically possible to change in size in the quick shifts I am going into, and wolves have the same ranges of body mass, so it is unnecessary. The law of conservation of mass states: Matter cannot be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. This means that you cannot change in size unless you find a way to draw on a source of matter, and as far as I know, there is no way.
Q: What happens to your clothes when you shift?
A: Well, most prefer to remove their clothes prior to shifting. If you do not, you will simply have to find a way to remove your clothes when you are in wolf form.
Q: When you shift, do you become a full wolf, or a hybrid?
A: As far as I have seen, everybody becomes a full wolf, but in a partial shift, which is a rare incident, or can be performed voluntarily by terminating a shift while in the transition (which is quite a bit harder than it sounds) will result in a partial shift, which will leave you in whatever hybrid stage you were in at the instant of termination. You can also shift individual body parts by only focusing on them.
Q: Is there a limit of time that you can remain in wolf form?
A: Technically, yes. Each person's limit varies on how much practice they have had. The reason for this limit is because the longer you remain a wolf, the deeper established your wolf form becomes, which means that it gets harder to change back the longer you remain in wolf form. The consequence of exceeding the time that you can power is simple: you lose the ability to change back. You basically get "stuck" as a wolf for the rest of your life, or until you can overwhelmingly pull through (rare). This point at which you should not pass is called the point of no return. Usually for a beginner it is about an hour, however for very experienced shifters, it can extend into a week. Never pass the PNR. That is an important warning.
Q: When I shift, will I still have my human mind?
A: Yes and no. Yes you will remember everything, and be in control. No, your mind will be quite changed. You will have the deep end of instincts and heightened senses as well as reaction. There is a certain situation that can cause you to temporarily lose your entire human function. That is called "possession". It is when your mind rejects it's human side entirely. There are 3 degrees of possession. 1st degree: Short loss of humanity (up to 1 minute), 2nd degree: Temporary long loss of humanity (1 minute or longer), and 3rd degree: permanent loss of humanity (permanent). Possession must be predicted before it occurs, because if you reach 3rd degree possession, you will have absolutely no human left in you. To predict this incident before it happens, there are symptoms you should be aware of: inability to control M-shifting, short attention span, overwhelming wolf instincts, occasional feeling or desire (like an addiction) to shift into a wolf, involuntary P-shifting, extreme loss of energy during p-shifting. If you have any one of these symptoms, be cautious that you do not lose focus while shifting, if you have more than 2 of these symptoms, you will very likely become possessed if you lose focus during a shift. This high risk can be reduced by practicing focus. It will always be a danger though.
Q: Can you become an animal other than a wolf?
A: Some of them, yes. Others require long term shifting (I don't describe it because it is unnecessary to become a wolf, and it requires total loss of ability to change back.) The ones that do not require long term shifts are the ones with same mass range as us (they can weigh the same as you)
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THE ONE THAT I GET ASKED MORE THAN ANY OTHER QUESTION: HOW TO SHIFT
I will describe the method for all forms of shifting. By popular request I will include not only rapid shift, but my general concept of long term shifting. If you know an animal form eligible for the rapid shift, then substitute the word "wolf" with "_whatever your animal is_"
There are 2 classes of shift, M and P. As you might already know, M-shift is Mental shift, and P-shift is Physical shift. The M-shift is where you induce instinct, thought pattern, and the base around which the P-shift is built. The P-shift is the actual change of the form of the body. There are 3 different subclasses of P-shift. They are Practice, On-Spot, and Long-Term. Before any of these, you must achieve an M-shift, and then, the first subclasses available are practice and long term. After practice, comes On-Spot, which is the true mastery of the P-shift. Long term is not a mastery, but a commitment. If you long term shift, you will never again be human, and once you have unlocked it, there is not turning back. Now that I have covered the basics, we are ready to proceed to the instructions, starting with the M-shift.
Warning! Shifting is a life change, it is not something to mess around with. Certain parts and consequences are irreversible. Do not attempt unless you are absolutely sure of what you are about to do. I reserve no responsibility for any action that you might take. Be aware of my warning. This REALLY WORKS when performed as instructed!
To M-Shift, there is a thing I like to call the 3IA of M-Shifting. Inspiration, Investigation, Imagination, Application. Those are all the steps to a successful M-Shift. Inspiration: You need to inspire yourself. Keep some pictures or other representation of a wolf nearby or with you at all times, and try to keep yourself thinking of wolves nonstop. At around the same time, you need to Investigate. Investigation: You need to find as much information about wolves as you can, and quiz yourself. Make yourself as much of a wolf expert as you can. After you are an "expert" you need to use all that knowledge you gathered and imagine it. Imagination: You need to draw on the behavior, minds, and instincts of wolves, and simply imagine yourself (to the point that you believe it) as a wolf, but not physically, mentally. Continue doing this until you are not only a wolf enthusiast and expert, but also a wolf at mind, so much that you feel that you are one at points, this means that the wolf side has taken over your mind. This is not a switch on and off thing. The M-shift is permanent, but it can be controlled so that you can fit in in human society. Once you M-shift, your mind is set on a permanent course becoming a wolf mind. It is irreversible, and can be set off involuntarily. This will definitely change you forever.
The next stage I will talk about is the Practice P-Shift stage. The alternate stage that opts-in here is the Long-Term Shift, which is 2 paragraphs down. The starting point of the practice P-shift is completion of the M-shift. Once that is complete, you must once again draw on the expert knowledge that you obtained in the Investigation part of the M-shift. You need to be able to picture the physical aspects of a wolf, AS MUCH AS YOU CAN POSSIBLY GET, and bring it to mind again. You must then use the skill gained in the Imagination part of the M-shift. You need to first fire up that wolf mind and relieve all restraints and "release your inner wolf" in a sanctuary (somewhere that you can be alone, relaxed, and free of all distractions.) Then you need to get relaxed as deeply as possible, and gather as much focus as you can on what it would look like and feel like to be a wolf for a second, now, fire up that wolf mind all the way until you feel you are a wolf again. Now, imagine your human body as "what I would look like IF I was a human" and work from that, and how it would feel as a human, and what it would look like, then work on to what it would feel and look like to shift into a wolf. Imagine it as VIVIDLY as possible using all senses. Keep practicing, it might not work the first time, I also recommend focusing on one body part at a time as you practice it, because you will get individual parts easier. Eyes, teeth, ears, paws, those are the easiest few. The tail comes in just after these. Work towards your end goal with PATIENCE. If you are impatient, you will not get any results. Usually a full shift takes 2 weeks to 4 months to achieve. It depends on the concentration of wolf blood in you, the more you practice, the more concentrated it becomes. You definitely don't want 100% though (that only happens after PNR, and 3rd degree possession). Once you achieve a shift, I call the point at which you shift, the barrier. The barrier is also called the "sneeze" by some, because the nature of the barrier is exactly like a sneeze. It begins with a strange sensation that rushes across you, and becomes a burst that you cannot control. When you reach it, you will feel a sensation like a cozy warm feeling, then a feeling of energy surging through you (not painful), that soon becomes a feeling of clenching and flexing all over your body, and a strange feeling that everything your body is made of is changing. During this, your body involuntarily moved as if you are being controlled, and it leaves you helpless to control your own body, this barrier lasts anywhere between 5 and 50 seconds. It is important that once you reach the barrier, you do not panic, or you will terminate the shift, and nothing will happen. You need to just be relaxed as a rock and let the shift take it's course. Once you do, you will become a wolf. So at this point it is important to know how to shift back. In the first few shifts, falling asleep is usually enough to end it, but if you aren't tired, remember that staying a wolf on the first few shifts for longer than an hour can result in PNR passing, and being "stuck" forever. So the other method is to P-shift back, imagine yourself returning, you might need to use more strength and focus the longer you stay. Be aware of that. It is a more simple reverse method of P-shifting to turn yourself back.
After the Practice shift, you are ready to work on the On-Spot P-Shift. Take note that this one is the one with the highest danger factor for those with possession. In this one, you just need to practice fully flaring your m-shift, and focusing hard enough to induce a full shift while you are not in controlled circumstances. Best methods of training involve doing this while standing up. Practice avoiding distractions, flaring your focus, flaring your M-shift, and quickly P-shifting. It is important to emphasize focus, and dropping your humanity to the point you know you are a wolf on a moments notice. String everything together and practice to P-shift on a moments notice in a distracting and stressful environment. That is the On-Spot shift.
***This is long term shifting, it is the shift that you can never return to human form, which you can use to become almost any animal, it is not recommended. DO NOT EVER ATTEMPT UNLESS YOU ARE READY TO GIVE UP YOUR ENTIRE HUMAN LIFE FOREVER. Now that you have been warned, this is just a concept, I cannot guarantee it works, because anybody who used it is no longer a human. The data I compiled is well passed in archives. It is not a common one, but under study, I find that it could work if performed properly. The Long-Term shift is long term in 2 ways. It lasts until you die, and it takes a relatively long time to be complete. First, you need to have some form of that animal's genes in you somewhere, and they must be in an active cell. You just repeat the actions in the M-shift, and Practice P-shift, but in the practice P-shift, you must focus day after day, and expect very tiny results. Eventually it will set you on a frictionless course to permanently becoming that animal. This one can work for animals of different masses, because the time frame allows you to gain or lose significant amounts of mass. This one is absolutely irreversible and inevitably results in possession.

________
The P-shift:
Before you read this, please note that I will not be responsible for any problems occurring in the shift, or if anything happens to you. This is how I shift and its to help Wolfs who cant or to improve it.
Lay down (I don’t know how to spell lie) in a spot where you feel like you can be yourself, relaxed, and away from distractions. After you do that, I use what Blaze does; Think of your human body and note it, the way the bones are, how the muscles feel, the fur-less skin, and think: this is what I would look like if I was human, and then think of your wolf… The eye color, the fur, bones, muscles….etc. Think of the way your mind works, and feel your snout. Smell better, see better (I have my eyes closed) and feel better. Tell your self “this is me, and I’m glad I am” when you look over your wolf. Feel the paws and joints, the claws, and the fur as immensely as you can. The M-shift will naturally grow stronger when you are doing this, when get dizzy and loose thinking a little, this is normal and if any spots are/get sore, encourage them, but when you picture your body, don’t “look at them” as such, like have all your attention focused on them, just Acknowledge that that’s there. Feel the wolf, and you should get that weird but nice feeling. But remember when you try this STAY STILL. I didn’t really do that that well when I tried the first couple of times, I would scratch an itch every half hour, that will stop the shift (well, it does for me anyway), now, well lately, after my first shift, I stay still. It gets you there.
Like blaze, my first shift was a full body shift, and I blacked out but I knew because my room was a mess, and my bin (luckily paper, since I had gone through it, yuck!) was split all over my room… I had a massive as job to clean up my room.
Now here is the As-If-I-were-you version (but please know I means you, since we all call ourselves I):
I lay down, and relax my breath… ten seconds in, ten seconds out. I focus on my human body, and search for any tightness and stress…. Releasing those, I relax. I think “you are sinking into cement; you’re body, head, legs, arms, are all heavy… (This relaxes you like hell!) Then I go into meditation: I try not to think, my mind is black… I may see thoughts. I Acknowledge them, know their there, and let them go. I am nothing, just my breath…I walk into a house/forest (I prefer forest), I walk through it, noticing the things I like. I pick my favorite room/spot I like, if it’s a room; theirs a chair. It can be any chair you want. Go sit in it, and relax. If it is a forest, your favorite spot can have a rock covered in moss or pine needles (for me, its gum leaves, and the smell of eucalyptus) covering the ground, making a soft bed. Lay down, and too, relax… (You can do that If I was a human before too, if you want) You are no longer a human, you are a wolf. Feel the fur, claws…etc. If anything starts to hurt, notice them, and encourage them. But don’t look at them. When I feel the pain, instead of looking for witch part on that human body it is, my back paw is hurting, my muzzle is throbbing etc… I start to get dizzy, I can only think of one thing at a time, but that is what I am thinking now, there are no back round thoughts… My body starts to move on its own, and I get that great soft pins and needle-ish feeling, it goes through my whole body… I open my eyes… My (insert color here) eyes.
I hope I can help lost of P-shifters-to-be out there to shift, and I wish everyone who tries my way the best of luck! And everyone else s way as well, but I found that I read heaps and constantly modified my shift method, so I didn’t shift due to the fact that the way I shifted modified/changed every time. My body couldn’t take it. So when I settled down and stuck to 1 shift method, I shifted. It was a full body shift, but I blacked out. I knew in the morning because I was sore all over and I had extremely heightened senses. If that happened to you, don’t talk yourself out of saying that you did it, because you would have. At the moment I am attempting to shift into a dingo since they are native they are easier to shift into for me (so far I’ve been getting results quicker than what I try as a wolf) I mean, yeah I want to be a wolf more, but this is to get me started and better. A Dingo is basically a wild dog, and my m-shift is that of a wolf. I think it is easier to shift into the were animal that is native to your aria, But I intend to go back to wolf after I have sort of mastered the dingo. Wolfs are bigger, and more wild and un-tamable creatures than the dingo.
Icy's Handbook:
So, just to help you if you wanted some more shifting info, here is all the info I have collected and written on shifting:
First off, I would like you to know that I have only fully shifted around two times, but I have done some in between things. I, and I have discussed the same thing with another member, like to think the mantra "I'm a wolf" now and then while P-Shifting. You have to be fully relaxed. Some of the pack members says being in water helps. Don't tense up. Imagine your self shifting, and really feel all the details. M-Shift before you P-Shift. It doesn't take just one night, practice and belief make perfect. If you feel you are upon a shift, DON'T QUIT. On one of my very first nights of practicing, I actually got really far! But I was thinking 'Oh, I can do it tomorrow! Heck, I have my whole life!" because the feeling really is shocking, and quit frightening. Since then, it has been very, very hard to get back to that state and I regret not continuing. If you get to a black, empty, float-y feeling, and your numb-ish, that's good. You might feel your thoughts slipping away and feeling very distant. It's a scary feeling. Urge that feeling. That is your humanity leaving. And I do recommend to urge any sensations, numbness, and even, pain. One way to know your on the right track is if you feel sore or start to twitch a lot. Those are beginning results. Also, if you feel this prickly "layer" between the sheets, bed, whatever your laying on, your getting the results of fur, which is very good. Really, I am hoping for the handbook soon from Blaze. He has pages of information, all the information we'll ever need to complete a shift, he says. But whenever we ask, he disappears, I guess. I hope he sends it out soon. You have to believe % and more. If you don't, you won't. Basically all the methods on the other sites are good, but I will try to help you out.
You'll have to have a good sense of visualization and mental concentration. Remember, don't get distracted, concentrate, believe, yes, it is to good- but it is true. Just keep M-Shifting, and get into that mindset before you attempt a shift. It will help. Be fully relaxed in a calm, dark place. Become relaxed. Once you are all comfy, don't move. Freeze. Become numb. Concentrate on your wolf self and the feel of it. Imagine your body clay, and you mold yourself into a wolf. Feel the pain. Encourage any pain, twitches, numbness, or sensations. Even dizziness. You might feel sudden snaps in some places of your body where bones are; your spine, neck, legs. Imagine, feel, a throbbing ball of energy in your chest that spreads through your whole body, transforming yourself into a wolf. Draw and write every detail of your wolf self, too. On one of my first tries I got here, and I freaked. I was scared and excited times ten. I thought, well, I have my whole life to do that again and I'll just think it over for now. So I was so happy I almost shifted, but then it took me forever to get back there. So if you get somewhere, don't procrastinate, don't panic, don't back out. Do it. Keep going. It will all work out and the results will change your life.
Vital notes: On the front paws, there is four toes. Then there is sorta a thumb, then a dew claw. On the back paws, there is only four toes. We have five fingers; poof goes your pinkie toe. Feel fur immensely. become Inspired. Don't give up. Believe, Believe, Believe, Believe, Believe,Believe,Believe.
As I say, dear moon, belief is key.
Fame_White_wolf's method
P-shift
P-shift or physical shift is when you actually transform into your were(animal) . Now to explain how this shift is going to work . First there is that law i mentioned above (conservation of matter and energy), all that your new body is going to have must come from your old one ,you need to expand energy to shift. Note - what size you are in human form that size you are in wolf form or i must say again that difficult sentence conservation of matter and energy :’( .Second thing is that you are going to shift bones etc, so you are going to be loud make sure no one is in your house or that you are in some soundproof room.OK now lets get back to the actual shifting J. So by now you finished m-shifting and now you are laying in your bed and want to p-shift, this is what you must do . First relax yourself because when you hit the barrier (explained later on) your body will move by itself , here’s a tip how to relax, when you lay on your bed(recommended) or wherever you are, do this, say and do the following to yourself : 50 breath in , 50 breath out ; 49 breath in, 49 breath out etc. . Now when you are relaxed make sure that there is no noise around you, make sure that there is minimal noise because if you lose your concentration your shifting will stop. Next you need to flare your m-shift ,just deny that you are a human and let go of your human feelings and let your animal mind take control. Now to start p-shift you need to do any of the following: imagine yourself as your were(animal) very vividly and try to keep that in your mind as long as you can , imagine your were(animal) spirit entering your body and changing it , try imagining yourself in human form while denying being human then imagine that your body is made of clay and it reforms into your animal form. Now when you hit the barrier try not to lose your focuser you will break the shift process and nothing will happen , your body will move on itself , your muscles are going to realign , your bones are going to realign and break they will move in certain pattern that allows you to stay alive during this process and after that you will become that fur animal J (wolf) or whatever animal you wanted to become .
Most important thing that you need to know: to shift you need from one week to month on perfect conditions but lets face the facts nobody is perfect , one night you will say oh I'm too tired , on next night you will say i can do it tomorrow its not like its going to run away (lol) , well it's going to run away if you keep doing that , then after that you will face something that most of us been trough you will start to question our existence and your faith in shape-shifting will be put to the test that’s where you must be strong that’s where many unfortunately quit! If you pass this you will believe in yourself and into shape-shifting like never before but you will still need time to complete shift!
Note! – it is possible that your m-shift faded(rare) so all you need to do is to start m-shift again but it will be much
Note - don’t expect to shift on the first try , you will have to practice alot !
Note - first time you will probably black out before you shift or if you lucky maybe after the shift but don’t worry you are expanding your energy it had to happen .
Note - when you shift first time you can only stay in your wolf form a few hours usually maximum 2 if you pass this you will stay wolf probably forever this is called point of no return or PNR , you will probably break the shift by falling asleep.
Some other things
Here are some other stuff i think i need to mention. If you are asking yourself what is that long term shift that allows you to become a very large animal J well i don’t know much about it , all i know is that it is easier that regular reversible shift , that you don’t need to m-shift before you become a wolf and that once you shift you can’t take your human form anymore :’( . The guy that knows something about this type of shift is the guy that we owe everything it used to be a alpha male of the Razgriz pack named Blaze. He isn’t with us anymore so long term shift is going to be a mystery for us for a while :’( .
Next there are two types of were animals , first are naturals the one’s that shifted without any practice in them is a highly concentrated were blood at least that’s my opinion , and the others are the one’s that achieved it trough practice.
ADSTER'S GUIDE TO SHIFTING
The main thing that will get you to shift fast is believing with all your heart and constantly thinking of it. You have to have a passion, and be determined. Instead of saying "I'm going to be a werewolf" or "I'm practicing becoming a werewolf" say "I am a werewolf" often. Instead of seeing in the eyes of a person see in the eyes of a wolf. Imaginary you are one, not becoming one. This takes belief, but is possible with much dedication.
When you want to shift don't go sitting for hours practicing your shift. And don't stress over it. Here are a few tips for shifting:
1: Just lie down with arms and legs spread out wide.
2: take a couple of deep breaths and imagine you are heavy (it calms you down a lot)
3: Imagine a duplicate of yourself. Then watch it transform into a wolf. Then give it a ball of power. Ask it its name. It might not respond the first time. this is normal.
4: now that you have done that image you are a wolf running free. Do things a wolf would.
5: Imagine each body part shifting. morphing. changing. Then imagine the whole body.
6: be free. be a wolf. imagine the wolf. imagine the change.
7: Soon you will feel change. Don't panic. Be calm.
8: Now your done. Do this as often as possible but don't spend TOO much time on it. You will get stressed over it.
Lilark's Method:
P-shifting is usually ALOT harder than m-shifting, and takes ALOT of practice. But cannot be done without first M-shifting
Sit or Lye down in a comfortable position. Let the silence take hold of your mind. Breath in and out slowly, If you start to get aches and Tingles, this is good. Focus on the parts of your body that have the most about of numbness or tingles. You may also feel a bit of pain, or hear bones cracking and moving out of place. Keep going. Don't freak, just go with it. Think of the way you look in human form. The way the bones are in place and how you move. Compare that with your wolf form. Note how the bone structure is and the muscles as it moves. Think of the bones moving inside of you. Get a mental Image of fur sprouting from every limb. Your skull squishing and teeth becoming sharper. Ears move further to the top of your head and become longer. Hands and feet, becoming paws. You have to think "I am the wolf! I am, I am!" Completely forget your even Human. You are a wolf in your mind. Then you are a wolf, In body.
Remember that Physically shifting your body can take as long as six months, to two years. It is a long, continuous practice that should be done once a day, at least an hour each.
But it can also can be reversed. To do this, Simply fall asleep, or set a timer to go off so that way you'll remember "Iv gotta go back!!". Trust me you DON'T want to be a permanent wolf. Also known as PNR.
Kiska's Method:
(Editor's Note: At the bottom of the method she says "way less painful" this is not true, as P-shifting is not "painful". Yes, It strains your muscles, but it is not a pain. Do not let is scare you)
To p-shift- lay down and close your eyes. Relax and only think of your animals form. the entire structure of him/her. Then you should start to feel numb. After you feel numb you need to start the shift somehow(pain).
So for the first shift i recommend partially shifting each body part . And i don't mean fully shift your leg and foot. i mean just somewhat shift each part. ok so it starts in your bottom right leg, bottom left leg, both thighs and tail , chest and back including your shoulders then head.SO before you start your head the rest of your body should look somewhat shifted. Then you fully shift your head and your body follows.
Now here's how i trigger the pain in the right leg- i start with the lower leg muscle and flex it kinda and it shoots up . then i just focus on my wolf. And for
the chest you just stretch it to your head then your head automatically starts.
Now the entire time your gonna have to keep your eyes closed and think of your animals form
Things you'll need is- time, focus/concentration, high pain tolerance, and an isolated area such as your room at night time with the door locked.
how to endure the pain- for each part your shifting you need to put all you energy in that part before the pain starts. this will increase the endorphins in the part your shifting hence the less pain.
so after you move the pain around your body a few times you should be almost fully shifted. Then you think of a strong emotion and force your body to finish the shift. the first shift might take around 2 hrs . This method is the less pain full way but longest.
Merfolk P-shifting methods
Pysical Shifting
A physical shift, is physically shifting into a mermaid. This method of shifting takes the most practice, but with a little effort you can do it. The hardest part about shifting is calling your mermaid form out. You can't have any doubt when doing this. Because if you do, the tail will not come out.
The easiest way to accomplish P-shifting is to have the F-shift, and the M-shift down to a T. Meaning you have to know exactly what your shifting for. Having a clear image of your tail in your head always helps. Also, you may want to be wet when doing this, and be in a quiet space where nothing will bother you. Below I have listed many shifting methods you can use, all from different people, you can try each one out so you know which one works best for you. Physical shifting takes multiple tries, so don't get upset if it doesn't work the first time.
Method 1 is about visualization. First, get comfy and relaxed from head to toe. Remember not to wear pants, considering it stops the shifting process, and they may rip. So if you aren't comfortable being naked, wear a big shirt. You can also use candles, and music that reminds you of mermaids. My personal favorite is "Beyond the Sea" by Celtic Woman. Next, close your eyes and start focusing on your energy from the top of your head, to the tips of your toes. See in your head your fluke forming to your desire. At this point you may feel some pain at your feet, toes, and ankles. Keep visualizing the pain as your mermaid self becomes physically tangable, physically real. Visualize your mermaid self coming out of your body, and becoming real. Do this SLOWLY and do not rush.
This quote is from KissingMidnight, who was one of the first online mermaids proven to be real.
"...I focused on the sun going down, and I imagined the day time as me, the light part of me that’s mundane, and logical. And then I imagined the night as the ocean and mermaids, magick and things not seen or understood. As the sun was setting, I finally shifted into my true mermaid form. It felt weird at first, but at the same time it felt like stretching a sore muscle. So it was a little painful, but the good kind of pain...."
1.the legs join together and may or may not elongate. spine elongates into tail and feet become flukes. and any additional fins will form out of skin and tissue(s).
2. the skin tone begins to change(possibly. depends on person) and a smooth dolphin like skin covers the tail(from apendix down). then the scales, in the proper colours, begin to form on the areas you wish(from apendix down).
3. gills form(possibly. depends on person) and lungs become similar to a dolphins(so you can hold breath longer & possibly. depends on person).
4.webbed hands and any fins on arms form(possibly. depends on person).
5. all things that are on neck and head form and the mental parts of the mermaid really set in(instinct, behaivor, and all).

Other mermaid method
P-SHIFT:
Now this is how you would do your p-shift, what I (Brooke) recommend is that you let your mind tell you what to do, I think i'm so deep into shifting that all I can talk about is shifting, literally, my friend has gotten annoyed at me for not being normal for once. So off of my life, and onto yours!
So for p-shifting I would either let your mind and body tell you what to do to try to bring out your mermaid side (if you're deep into the process), or practice the phantom-shifting technique, the one where you feel you have a tail, and all. This hasn't been on many lists of shifting as it is considered unimportant. The phantom shifting has only supposed to have been for you to meditate, but it's now helping me p-shift.
The p-shift means physical-shift, basically doing what the name insists, physically shifting into a mermaid with a tail and gills and all! But if you don't know much about gills and expanded lungs I will tell you in the upcoming paragraphs! For now, some techniques for p-shifting. I will tell you the technique for ph-shifting, unless you already know this, then skip the first technique.
Technique No. 1: Phantom Shifting technique:
Sit in a comfortable position, legs right in front of you, together as if your legs were molded together, now lightly hold your legs together, not with your hands, rest your hands on your stomach, not by the sides of your legs. Now lie your back down once you know you are ready and breathe in through your nose, and out through your mouth. Keep on doing this, while FEELING as if your legs are slowly molding together, do NOT imagine in your mind your legs molding together, you have to feel it. Feel your legs getting closer and closer, until they mold together (even if it's not happening in real life, you still have to feel it, it may happen after multiple tries!) Feel as your feel are connecting and stretching out into a long, sturdy, fluke in the shape that you desire. Now unless you are in the bath do not shift gills. Feel your legs slowly, very slowly coming together and forming scales, then slowly turning the desired color. Once you feel the need or want to leave, then go. Unless this has worked so far and you got your legs to mold together you have to meditate and try to reverse this and get out of it. There, you're done!
Technique No. 2: Under Construction:
Gills and Lungs:
Now that we've got most things covered, (unless you skipped a whole bunch of stuff, most things are very important) we are going to cover gills, and lungs. For those of you that are younger, or just do not know, you CANNOT have gills on land. If you tried shifting gills in your bedroom or living room, go to the bathroom immediately and wash some water on your neck/behind your ears/wherever you have your gills and run a bath immediately. once you have get in it and let your gills breathe. See gills, if you got gills on land or in your house, not in a bathtub, you would die. See if you had gills, they are just an overpowering way of breathing, you would instinctively start breathing with your gills, as you would in the ocean, but if there was no water around to get oxygen from you would die.
Mermaid gills are in your nose, and behind your ears. Every mermaid has these gills, but if you really don't want these or you just want to perpetually hold your breath instead with expanded lungs be my guest. In addition to regular mermaid gills, you could also have and add on either gills, placed directly on the ribcage, or gills placed on the front sides of your neck. Remember that you need to know exactly everything about gills, how they work on the inside, etc. You need to know where your lungs are/where your air tube is and have those gills have areas to breathe from there.
Now we have lungs. if you would like you could have ONE large lung. But this may be harder for some, as you need to know where it would be, how the organs around you would work, etc. I personally would rather have gills, as I find them more easy shift into, but onto expanded lungs. For this you have to shift the insides of your body so you have one large lung, but you would need to come up for more air every once in a while because these are NOT gills and you cannot stay underwater forever with expanded lungs.
(from )
Theories tend to vary based on each shifter - Why can we shift? If we can shift, why is it so widely believed to be impossible among humans? Until questions are answered on a verifiable, scientific level, we just have to theorize why we exist.
In one corner and one extreme, some shifters believe that it is purely genetics - the gene and gene sets are recessive and it evolved as a way to be stronger and hunt better in pre-civilization days. This is a very prevalent idea, as after all, shifters and avians are rare, rare to the point to where someone may be a shifter, yet the rest of their family is not. It is however, very flawed. The notion that an entire second set of genes for animalistic form could spontaneously evolve or mutate within a hundred thousand years is quite flatly, very very improbable. Then, for an entire second set of genetic code to be recessive, and act as a single gene, is genetically impossible.
Many genetics-only theorists tend to believe that mammal shifters are the only shifters that exist, and avians, mermaids, mythic shifters, physical demons and angels, etc, are not real. This leads to a large hostility between the genetics-only community and the other extreme theory, that anyone can shift.
The Anyone Can Shift theory is also a major extreme in the community. People who believe in this theory have a wide range of beliefs, from shifting being purely spiritual in nature, to it being magical or alien in origin, to the shifting ability existing in every human. These are the folks who believe that subliminals and spells can turn you into a nonhuman. In this theory, there is no restriction - if you want to be nonhuman, you can become it and learn to shift. Some even believe it is possible to become gods, aliens, impossible hybrids, fictional species, etc. This is also majorly flawed, as if this were true, then shifters would not be rare. If everyone could shift, everyone would be shifting. If this were true, why would anyone stop at just being a werewolf or avian? Why wouldn't everyone just become a god?
I'm sure you can see why this is ridiculous.
However, in the middle of the road, we approach the theory that makes the most sense. This theory doesn't exactly have a name. It has a narrow belief, yet it covers most of the bases, and it can be summed up in one sentence.
If you are meant to be it, then you already are it.
This theory covers both genetic and spiritual bases, for if your fate is to be a dragon shifter, then you have incarnated into a dragon shifter body. If you are meant to grow wings and be an avian, then you have incarnated into a body that can grow wings.
The only thing this theory lacks is how shifters and avians came to be, how the genetic material and ability to shift evolved. As this theory is still evolving, there is room to figure it all out. :)
For young nonhumans, those confused by wants instead of needs, or for those who will eventually find out they are just human, finding who you are is incredibly difficult. And in a community that hates humanity, if you do find out you are human, embracing your true self can seem dangerous. After all, you're going to lose all of the friends you've made, and many, many groups will remove humans.
But this brings many, many troubling things. People who hate humanity wanting to become anything they can, younger folk being pressured into using subliminals for things they don't want, human allies seeing our groups as evil, and older folk getting sick of the community, removing valuable knowledge from the cycles.
In this article, we will be discussing many things that for some, will make them upset. For others, this will be an affirmation of identity.

One of the most common questions is "What kind of nonhuman am i?" Often asked to those who should not be answering, this question is dangerous when asked in public. If you ask four people, you will get four different answers.
Why does this happen? The answer is simple - No one can tell you what you may be or who you are. No one can read your energy and tell you that you have "dragon dna". No one knows your purpose here but you.
To many, this is obvious, but many, many young or inexperienced nonhumans are led astray by this.
Energy reading is incredibly unreliable for physical things. I once had an energy reader who claimed to be an expert tell me I was a deer shifter. Am I a deer? If I am, that's one messed up deer. Claws, horns, canine teeth, and feathered wings aren't normal on deer as far as I'm aware. But that's besides the point. Even experienced and truly skilled mediums and energy workers have a hard time seeing physical things. After all, your soul could be a wolf, but you physically a human. Your soul could be a mermaid, but physically you're an avian. Energy reading should never be used to try and tell people what they are.
So, how do you find out what you truly are? This answer is, sadly, less than simple.
As i said before, only you can find out what you truly are. This can take many, many months to years to figure out for sure. Some know it instantly, others take a very long time.
The first step is learning. Learn everything you can about the creatures on this planet with us. Learn about sharks, birds, canines, felines, mustelids, gnomes, unicorns, leviathans, perytons, anything and everything. If you have a good grasp on what animals and creatures live or have lived on this planet with us, you can more easily narrow down what you feel connected to.
The second step is introspection. You've learned everything you can, but you still have a list of five creatures you feel you could be, or those you're connected to. Instead of claiming you're some kind of impossible hybrid, take some time to sit back and think. What feels the most right? What could I see myself being for the literal rest of my life? Does this creature make me happy? If so, do they make me happy as a separate entity or do they make me happy in a way that I feel like I am one of them?
This step is supposed to take a while. Introspection is a life skill, and should take days to even months to finalise. Shifting is a life changing experience, and is not to be taken lightly. Would you enjoy it if, suddenly, you shifted into a creature but found out you couldn't shift back? If you find any semblance of disappointment, regret, or negative emotions, then that creature is not for you.
Introspection is not quick - it shouldn't be done hastily. If you find yourself m-shifting but then suddenly realise that you don't like the thing you're m-shifting into, you're ruined. M-shifting is permanent, and you will be stuck with that creatures mindset forever. This is why this step needs to happen.
One thing to be considered is the different calls that all nonhumans experience. All nonhumans experience these calls, they are universal. If you do not feel any of these calls, then it is very very likely that you are human. The calls are not choices. These are not wants. These are not mental shifts - they are instinct, they are what drive shifting. You cannot force one of these calls to appear. You cannot force a call to go away - they are as permanent as death. They are more than otherkinity and more than therianthropy. They are eternal, the phone that rings even in sleep.
The first and largest call is the call to the wild. Many nonhumans have this call, from wolf shifters, to dragons, to extra limb growers. The call to the wild is the pull, the need, not want, to be in the wilderness living freely. But even that is an understatement. It is a phone that never stops ringing, a hook that never stops being tempting. When you look out the car window and your entire body wants to run off into the woods for no reason other than you need to be there, you need to be out there, that is the call to wild.
The second call is the call to the sea. Mermaids, ocean dragons, marine shifters, they all experience this call. Similar to the call of the wild, it is the need to be in the ocean or water, to return to the ocean, as it is their home.
The last call is the call to the sky, another large call that is experienced by avians, dragons, and other winged creature shifters. This call is not to the wild or to the sea, this call is for the air. The nonhumans who have to fly - without it they will never be complete. Without flight, these nonhumans feel their life isn't worth living - they need to fly. The call to the sky is difficult to deal with. But, it must be done.
The third step is Acceptance.

So you've found out that you're nonhuman, now what? Shifting or growing extra limbs seems like a mountain that never stops rising, one that seems like a monumental task. But even if shifting takes years, you must realise that you are nonhuman, and this will never leave you. You are nonhuman - even if shifting takes you twenty years. You are nonhuman - even if you hate shifting. You are nonhuman - even if you leave, it will always resurface. Being nonhuman will never leave you - it's who you are, and repressing who you are is never good.
So how can you accept it? It seems crazy, it seems dangerous, it seems like it will take years. And what if you try for years only to find out that you can't shift? Or to find that growing extra limbs has yielded no results?
For some, these doubts no longer exist. But for others, these doubts still hammer in their minds. For some shifters, they despise shifting, but still accept themselves for who they are.
Accepting being nonhuman takes time, especially if the nonhuman you are isn't exactly what you hoped you would be. But, you must realise that it will never leave you, so why fight it? You were born here, as nonhuman, for a reason.
For humans, this might seem shocking. How am I just human when I want to be xyz? How could I be one of them? I hate humanity!
But, being human is not bad. In fact, it's great! You will never experience the calls, you will never have to worry about shifting, p flares, trying to hide extra limbs that cannot be hidden, you will never have to worry about shifting while sick or injured, or potentially being seen by people when in animal form.
Not to mention, humans have been doing great things recently. There have been over 1.6 billion, yes billion, trees planted this year, with 20 million more coming soon. 10 species were removed from the endangered list thanks to conservation efforts, including grey wolves, pandas, grey whales, and the white rhinoceros. Climate change is being reversed as you read this.
Humanity does great things! Humans went to space! Humans have developed ways to use selective breeding to create crops that survive locust attacks. Humans domesticated foxes, they've developed ways to harness solar energy for power. Humans are incredible, and you should be proud to be a part of the generation that is making the largest changes in the world to date.
The news always focuses on the bad, because the bad makes good headlines. Would you read a paper titled "6th grader gave his allowance to homeless man"? Probably not. But there is good in this world and it is eradicating the bad.
And you are a part of it. You can make a change, you are here for a reason. You are human for a reason.

You're here for a reason, you found this group for a reason. Was the reason to discover that you're human, or discover that you're not human? Only you know.
But, everyone has a purpose. Whether that purpose is to be a cranky 19 year old demon writing articles about self love and that being human is a good thing, or if your purpose is to just simply shift and return to your home in the sea, sky, or wilds, you do have a reason for being here.
Finding out why you're here.. it's difficult. Even I do not know my purpose, so i am not going to write flowery bullcrap that may not be helpful or true. I can only say that with time, things will make sense. Things will fall into place and destiny will be in your grasp.
All you have to do is hold that true to yourself, know that you have purpose, know that you were not born in vain, and all the power you could want is yours. Take reigns of that paint brush and paint a masterpiece with your life.
Now, this entire post will be my philosphy. Despite my general beliefs and workings with Shintoism, and the Earthen Draconic religion, as well as true Luciferianism, I do not worship any god.
TW for mentions of suicide.
In short, Gods are not needed. Especially gods who ask for or demand worship for their services or miracles.
In my entire life, Lucifer, Beelzebub, Mammon, Leviathan, Belphegor, etc, all have provided me their workings without worship, none have denied me from help due to lack of offering - You may equate this to me being a demon so they are inclined to help me regardless, but the principle is still there. No entity should request worship for anything.
Why? Well, even with the consideration of fate, you are the main character in your life, you are the god of your life, you are your entire universe, your reality, you are everything in your life. So what right does any entity have to demean you as lesser, as not important, to view you as weaker or as inferior to them? There is no reason, there is no merit for that belief.
Now, you might ask, how am I the god of my own life? Well, you largely control whether you live or die. You could grab a gun and end your life, you could drink various poisons, yet you do not. No spiritual entity can kill you, the best they can do is try to make you do it yourself.
Now, is this saying that people who have been murdered, r//ed, or otherwise hurt or killed by other people wanted it or planned it? No, that's not what this is, although I could delve into the theory of quantum immortality, I don't think that would support this philosphy.
This theory instead is about yourself and the ego, you should never view yourself as lesser.
One of the largest issues for young ones I see is the rush to work with, or beg gods to grow wings or shift. None of it is needed. Shifting and Growing wings is not a spiritual endeavor, it is a physical one. Spirituality can be involved, but the basis of it isn't spiritual.
In truth, what could a god help you with that you cannot do yourself? They cannot magickally make your wings grow overnight, nor can they make you shift suddenly, all of it must still be worked towards regardless, so why submit yourself to narcissistic entities who, in the end, supply nothing?
Even if you are or work with spirituality every day, there is nothing you need a god for - All of my knowledge of dragons, shifting, spiritual work, of hell, everything I know, has come from my own intuition, from my own wish to know and learn more. No god has ever been needed for me to know about what I am, or shift.
The ego is a marvellous thing, once you start viewing yourself as important, as the driving factor for change in your life, your whole life becomes brighter. Now, you won't want to overdo it, but to view yourself as the main character in your life, so why wouldn't you grow wings, why wouldn't you be able to shift, why can't you be psychic, this affirmation and removal of doubt is the most powerful thing in existence.
You can do anything you wish to, by yourself, without any god or entity needed.
I have tried to work with various gods throughout my life, Tiamat, Quetzalcoatl, The christian god, Demeter, Artemis, Loki, Thor, Odin, Nidhoggr, Amaterasu and Inari.
And while I still consider some of them friendly, parental figures even, there is no miracle, no work, no magic they can preform that I cannot do myself. So why should I view myself as lesser to them? Tiamat tried to kill me, Thor and Loki sent me off in a different direction, Demeter and Artemis refuse to talk to me after my realization that I do not need any deity, The only ones that have stayed near and have never tried to hurt me or deflect my questions have been Inari and Amaterasu.
Lucifer has even tried to prevent me from knowledge, deflecting my suspicions, attempting to stall my awakening, but in the end, he released those locks.
Out of pity? Perhaps for some, Gods pity their lack of self worth, but no, Instead I feel it was out of respect. We have the same ego, the same pride in our stars.
When you view yourself as your own god, as the most important person, there is nothing that can stand in your way. All doubt will be erased, all blocks will cease to exist.
You control your life, You work to change your life, no one else does. No amount of worship, of offerings, no amount of devotion will change your life.
You may think, the gods are preventing you from achieving wings, shifting, or anything else as a test, but the test is made in your mind. The only block that exists is the notion that you are somehow lesser.
Once you learn this, the canvas becomes your own, and you wield the paintbrush.
