The Board of Ethics’ training program is a fundamental part of the Board’s commitment to increasing honesty and integrity within City government. The Board’s general ethics sessions cover topics such as conflicts of interest, political activity, and gifts. In addition, the Board also offers trainings for campaign finance, lobbying, and financial disclosure.
A few highlights from FY2021 include:
A renewed effort to educate board and commission members annually – the Board held 28 training sessions for “B&C” members including individual board and multi-board trainings.
Political activity information sessions that explained recent changes to the City Charter.
Semi-annual lobbying training for lobbyists, lobbying firms, and principals.
The campaign finance series, which covered everything from an overview of the campaign finance law, to best practices, to campaign finance for ward committees.
In FY2021, the Board offered a total of 93 training sessions and presented to over 2,485 people - nearly double the number of programs offered and people trained in comparison to FY2020. All of these training sessions were held virtually via Zoom or Teams. This virtual format – which became a necessity during the COVID-related City Offices Shutdown in FY2021 – allowed the Board to broaden its impact and to reach more City employees, officers, and members of the regulated community. These virtual sessions were so successful that Board Staff plans to continue to utilize them even after the end of the COVID pandemic.
In FY2021, the Board partnered with multiple City offices and stakeholders to provide departmental trainings, CLEs, and topical resource materials. Some notable partners included the Mayor’s Chief Integrity Officer, City Council, the City Commissioners, the Office of the District Attorney, and numerous City boards and commissions. Over the next year, the Board plans to continue to diversify its offerings in all areas and begin training for businesses that engage with the City.

In FY2021, Board Staff produced and updated manuals, educational guides and resources, and FAQs. Board Staff also added content to blogs and websites aimed at improving access to helpful information on regulatory changes, informal guidance, and training.
