FAQ

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME

What is the difference between a Studienleistung and a Prüfungsleistung?

You will need to do a Studenleistung (= coursework) to complete a Seminar, and a Prüfungsleistung  (= exam) to complete a Module. Studienleistungen are not graded, you just pass or fail. They can have any form, e.g. a presentation or task sheets. This depends on the professor. Prüfungsleistungen can be an oral or a written exam and will be graded. Passing grades can vary from 1.0 (the best grade), 1.3, 1.7, 2.0, ... to 4.0 (the worst grade, with which you still pass).

How do I register for a Studienleistung?

Contact the lecturer if you want to register for a Studienleistung. Some lecturers offer registration via Stud.IP, but not everyone. Have a look at the module catalogue, to figure out which number your Studienleistung has. You can find it here: https://www.philos.uni-hannover.de/fileadmin/philos/Modulkataloge/Modulkatalog_Philosophy_of_Science_WiSe2021.22.pdf

Please have a look at the table at the end of it. It gives you an overview of the numbers that are attached to each Studienleistung and Prüfungsleistung. The MEML Module, for example, has the number 200, the respective Prüfungsleistung/ exam number is 210, and the Studienleistungen/ course work is number 260, 261, and 262.

Choose which one of them you need to do, and tell your lecturer which one it is that they can register you with the correct number.

How do I register for a Prüfungsleistung?

You can register for the Prüfungsleistungen at your QIS Page. Go to MyStudies// Exam Registration/ Withdrawal// accept// Master of Arts Philosophy of Science. There you pick the module in which you want to register for the Studienleistung and click on "Registration for Exam" with the respective examiner.

Is there a registration period for Studienleistungen?

There is no strict period per se; however, since many courses require ongoing coursework to be submitted throughout the semester in order to obtain the SL,  you should make sure that your lecturer is aware at the beginning of the semester of your intention to obtain credit for the course. You need to communicate with your lecturer when, and how the Studienleistungen for their course works. Usually, lecturers will explain this in the first session of their course.

Is there a registration period for Prüfungsleistungen?

Yes, there is a registration period for Prüfungsleistungen. The dates for the relevant semester can always be found at the following link:

Exam Information – Leibniz University Hannover (uni-hannover.de)

Exception: The registration period for the PL in the Project Module is different, so remember to pay attention to this.

Where can I find the super helpful module planner?

On this page, you can find it by clicking in the upper right corner.

Where are the POS Module descriptions located?

They can be found in the module catalogue. I placed a copy here, and the link: https://www.philos.uni-hannover.de/fileadmin/philos/Modulkataloge/Modulkatalog_Philosophy_of_Science_WiSe2022.23.pdf

--> This is the new module catalogue, which applies from now on! (Winter Semester 22/23)

If you need the old catalogue, you can find it here: https://www.philos.uni-hannover.de/fileadmin/philos/Modulkataloge/Modulkatalog_Philosophy_of_Science_WiSe2021.22.pdf

Are you naturally signed up for a Studienleistung if you do a Prüfungsleistung?

Technically, our exam regulations allow that you only do a Prüfungsleistung in a certain seminar without completing the Studienleistung. For example, if you already have all the Studienleistungen for a module, but still miss the Prüfungsleistung, you might need to do that. However, please talk to the lecturer of the seminar in this case as they also have to agree. Some might say it makes no sense (contentwise) to only do the Prüfungsleistung, and then you would have to do another Studienleistung even if you wouldn't need it just from the exam regulations. So the short answer would be: no, you're not naturally signed up for a Studienleistung if you want to do a Prüfungsleistung. But it's strongly recommended not to do only the Prüfungsleistung.

Where can I find official exam information and course advice for our program?

This page is a helpful collection of information: https://www.uni-hannover.de/nocache/en/studium/im-studium/pruefungsinfos-fachberatung/studiengang/detail/info/philosophy-of-science/

How do I register a Prüfungsleistung for the "Electives" module (EM) or for the "Project Module"?

The form can be found with this link: https://www.uni-hannover.de/fileadmin/luh/content/pruefungsamt/formulare/wissphil/927_89_13_Meldeb_MP.pdf

It needs to be filled and sent directly to the Prüfungsamt, Anna-Lena Bauer is the contact person there: anna-lena.bauer@zuv.uni-hannover.de

Prüfungsleistungen (and Studienleistungen as well) for the "Electives" Module (EM) have to be approved by Prof. Dr. Uljana Feest, so it's best to consult her first before choosing a course and filling out the form.

How many PL do we need for the MEML module?

One, as in every other module. It was just a mistake in the module planner, I uploaded a correct version now.

Can you just do a PL in a course if you already have the SL, and vice versa?

Yes, as long as you communicate this with the instructor of the course and they have no objections.

Whom do I contact if I am having issues with my SLs and PLs being registered?

For issues with SLs and PLs, please get in touch with Ines Bartling at the Prüfungsamt: Ines.Bartling@zuv.uni-hannover.de

How many courses should I take per semester?

This varies from person to person; however, students generally aim to take around six courses per semester to finish their coursework in three semesters.

Can you take courses for credit from outside the institute?

Yes, provided they are considered sufficiently related to your degree. The way to do this is to register any courses (including language courses) under the Electives module, provided Prof. Feest (in charge of this module) signs off on them.

How do you register courses for the Electives module?

You must first enrol in the Stud.IP course “Electives Module”. Thereafter, you can access the relevant forms, as well as a description of the nature and requirements of the module.

Once I have completed my coursework and thesis, when will I get my diploma and grade?

Your thesis is usually graded within six weeks, after which you will receive your diploma and grade.

Is there any preferred referencing style in the department?

No, as long as you use an academically recognised referencing style and are consistent throughout a piece of submitted work, you are free to choose whichever style you prefer.

EXAMS

Can I deregister from an exam and, if so, how should this be done?

Yes, the rule is that you can deregister from an exam up until one week before for a written exam, and up until one day before for an oral exam. The process is detailed on the following webpage under section 7: Exam Information – Leibniz University Hannover (uni-hannover.de).

To whom can I speak if I have a good reason for thinking my exam has been unfairly graded?

Firstly, it should be noted that only on very specific grounds can you object to an evaluation. If an objection is submitted, the examination board will review whether:

1. the examination process was duly carried out,

2. the evaluation was based on incorrect facts,

3. generally applicable evaluation principles were not observed,

4. a reasonable and logically justified solution was evaluated as incorrect, or whether

5. the examiner was guided by irrelevant considerations

If you wish to embark on this process, your complaint must be submitted within one month of receiving your grade.

Can you retake an exam if you’re not happy with your grade?

No, the only event in which an exam can be repeated is in the case of a failed examination.

THESIS

Can I have an external supervisor for my thesis?

Yes, but you need to discuss this with your internal supervisor first, who has to agree to this and be able to justify this arrangement.

How long does the thesis have to be?

The university recommends between 60 and 70 pages, although this is slightly flexible.

How do I register my thesis?

First, you need to fill in a form and submit it to the Examinations Office, after which they will send you a form to be completed by your first examiner, who officially "assigns the topic". The relevant forms can be downloaded here: Forms – Leibniz Universität Hannover (uni-hannover.de).

Do I  need to be enrolled in order to submit my thesis?

Yes, in order to submit your thesis, you have to be enrolled.

Once you are enrolled for a semester you are enrolled until the next semester starts. For example, if you are enrolled for the summer semester, this is valid until September 30th, and for the winter semester, you are enrolled until March 31st.
