After her cheerleading squad loses a competition for the first time in seven years, coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) becomes depressed, and stages an apparent suicide by "overdosing" on gummy vitamins. Her colleague, school guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays), suggests that she temporarily join the school glee club, New Directions, to lift her spirits. Hoping to create discord within the group, Sue pits members Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Rachel (Lea Michele) against one another. Her plan backfires when a duet between the two results in a deepening of their respect for one another vocally. In an attempt to bring out the good in Sue, club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) takes her to a pediatric cancer ward, where they sing "This Little Light of Mine" with the patients.

Meanwhile, Lauren Zizes (Ashley Fink) enlists Puck to help her with her first glee club solo. With Puck's assistance, she performs "I Know What Boys Like" by The Waitresses, and using a trick he taught her, imagines the club members in their underwear for confidence. Later, Sue suggests that the club perform the anthem "Sing" by My Chemical Romance, as they must present an anthem at the forthcoming Regionals competition. They rehearse the song, and it is well received by most of the members, who disregard Rachel's suggestion that they should instead compose an original anthem. Her week with New Directions over, Sue reveals that she has become the vocal coach for one of the glee club's Regionals competitors, Aural Intensity.

The performance of the duet "Take Me or Leave Me" elicited praise from Brown and Fallon, who both deemed it the highlight of the episode. Brown noted that "it had that addictive Glee quality of actually feeling like high school, and watching Mercedes and Rachel have a blast blasting each other was a treat."[23] Gonzalez gave the duet a "B", as, while there was "so much to swoon for", she is more partial to ballads because they "discourage oversinging throughout the entire song".[24] Futterman wrote that while Mercedes had more sass than Rachel, "both ladies sang".[22] VanDerWerff did not see how the song was relevant, and felt that Michele's voice was ill-suited to it.[25]

We kind of wish they had put on their choir robes instead and fully embraced the arrangement."[22] Although Gonzalez gave the performance a "B", she called it "lacking" and not "regionals material": "We need to be blown away."[24] TV Guide also listed this rendition as one of Glee's worst performances.[32]

Membership in the Glee Club is open to all students enrolled at any of the Claremont Colleges or Claremont Graduate University who are also active, reliable, and strong members of the Pomona College Choir or the Pomona College Orchestra. Singers selected for the ensemble have successfully passed rigorous auditions evaluating their individual strengths in singing and sight reading, their abilities to learn a great deal of music quickly, and their readiness to work within a small ensemble, where blend and musical sensitivity are essential.

Lindsay Summers Pope '07 was the Director of Choral Activities and Visiting Lecturer in Music at Mount Holyoke College from 2011 through 2016. Under her direction, the choral groups performed a challenging, varied repertoire for women's voices, joint concerts for mixed chorus, and led an alum tour of Ireland in Summer 2015. All of the choral ensembles continue the tradition of presenting the annual Christmas Vespers concerts on campus, in New York City, and in Boston. Choral music at Mount Holyoke is still going strong, with almost 200 students involved in singing every year.

What keeps kids coming back year after year? Our Summer Music Camps are jam-packed with music, more music, and fun! Students, ages 3-11 of all levels and abilities (no experience necessary), will have the opportunity to learn to sing in our pop glee clubs, drum their hearts out in world drumming class, play various instruments, and participate in fun musical activities! In addition, our older kids (6-11) will learn an instrument: piano or ukulele. Our younger students (ages 3-5) will be immersed in a world of music exploration, from instrument playing, to rhythm and melody, and of course, fun! We have highly qualified instructors on staff to ensure a well-rounded educational experience and an exciting week. In addition to group instruction in voice and instruments, students will make friends, play games, and have an all-around musical good time! Founded in 1894, the University Glee Club of New York City is an all-male singing group established to encourage male voice singing of the highest excellence. Its 120 active singing members span recent college graduates and men who have sung with the UGC for over fifty years. Celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2019, its roster over the years has included thousands of men from hundreds of universities and colleges, all possessing the desire to sing, learned or fostered during their undergraduate years. The UGC performs two major concerts each season and its repertoire covers a wide range of music including classical, Broadway musicals, sea chanteys, spirituals and traditional college songs.

If you are passionate about singing, then KU has a choir for you. Ensembles are open by choral placement to all students at the University, regardless of major. Whether you are an accomplished singer or someone seeking to develop and refine your vocal abilities, you will find a place in one of our choirs. KU choirs perform various concerts throughout the school year, and then combine with the Symphonic Orchestra for the Holiday Vespers in December and a major concert in the spring semester. In addition to performances in the fall and spring semesters, KU choral experiences expand to summers with international touring and entering competitions.

I joined the Sherwoods in the fall of 1970 as a baritone and became co-leader with Jim Hood until I graduated in the summer of 1973. I sang with the Sherwoods alumni at a couple of reunions back in the late 90s and early 2000s, but moved further away and lost touch with former members like Dan Murray, George Preston, Mark Dix Bob Berger, Rob Booth and Rich Conklin who brought me into the group. I would love to reconnect now that I am retired and more in control of my schedule.

MUSIC 8 Rudiments of Music (3) (GA)(BA) This course meets the Bachelor of Arts degree requirements. Learning the rudiments of music can be compared to the learning of a language. Students must learn to hear melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic patterns (audiation) before they sing, play or write in notation. In this introductory class, students are introduced to melodic, harmonic and rhythmic patterns by imitating the instructor who establishes these patterns at the piano, or by singing or as in the case of rhythm by striking a drum head. Eventually students will take turns "tossing" these patterns to teach other. Basic skills of improvisation can also be taught at this level of audiation by having students expand upon the basic patterns. As a result of these creative and aesthetic experiences, students will be able to translate the audiation of patterns into musical notation - moving from the smallest unit of a rhythmic motive towards the creation of a coherent rhythmic phrase. Similarly, at the melodic level, the student will begin with intervallic patterns and move towards the creation of a coherent melodic phrase. Intervals are then combined vertically to form harmonies. At the next stage of learning, students will learn to identify and to write that which they are hearing in dictation.This course in "musical literacy" enables students: (1) to deepen their appreciation of music (2) to begin studying a musical instrument and (3) to enter the rigorous study of music theory required of music majors.
