In this same interlude it doth befall
That I one Snout by name present a wall;
And such a wall as I would have you think,
That had in it crannied hole or chink,
Through which the lovers,
Pyramus and Thisby,
Did whisper often very secretly.
This loam, this rough-cast,
and this stone doth show,
That I am that same wall; the truth is so;
And this the cranny is, right and sinister;

Gregor, now, didn't even venture into the room, rather he leaned himself up against THE Wall by the side of the Door, next to where the Lock engages so that his body was half-concealed and above the other half his head poked out: he peered around looking upon all of the Others. In the meantime the sky had brightened considerably, the blackish gray houses were clearly visible along the other side of the street, at least a long row of them that seemed simply to taper off into infinity--this was a hospital complex that had barred windows, regularly spaced; the rain was still coming down but only in large raindrops, raindrops that you could see - each one individually as it fell and then splattered upon the earth.
The breakfast cutlery was clearly evident on the table, enough to satisfy even the largest family for father considered breakfast to be the most important meal of the day, a meal that went on for hours as he poured over the News of the Day. Across the room upon the opposite Wall was a framed photograph of Gregor from his time in the military, he had attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and the photo showed him with his hand on the sword, laughing carelessly but still demanding respect for his fine posture and uniform.
NOW, Gregor spoke up, clearly conscious that he was the only one who had remained calm, fully retaining his grip upon reality - I'm going to get dressed immediately, I'll pack up my collection and Off I Go. Do you want, are you willing that I resume my travels?

Due to all of the troubling revelations from Olga K. was somewhat rattled, and yet he perceived a bright side to her having opened up to him, namely that there were people here in the village who--at least from the surface--seemed to suffer in a similar way as he did, and so it was only natural that he wanted to tie himself more closely with this family, that there was bound to be significant insights to be gleaned from discussing a great many things together with them, not merely a few matters as was the case with Frieda. To be sure, he had already begun to give up any hopes that he had held as regards Barnabus' ability to bring him closer to the officials in the Castle, but Barnabus' inability as a messenger was balanced out by his having become much more of an equal as a human being here down below. K. had never even considered that such a miserable state of affairs might exist right here in the midst of this village, obviously the situation of the Barnabus household was a moving example of how absurd things can be...
