If you want a comfortable, bass-forward wired solution that feels like a soft cloud for long listening sessions, choose Philips SHP6000; if you need studio-grade precision with a rugged metal frame and superior driver technology, choose Austrian Audio Hi-X20.
• Philips SHP6000: Delivers exceptional comfort with deep foam ear cups and a focus on rich, high-resolution audio with extended low-end response, but lacks the durability of metal components found in professional gear.
• Austrian Audio Hi-X20: Features robust metal construction, a detachable cable system, and specialized Hi-X drivers for ultra-low distortion and precise mixing, though it sits slightly heavier on the head due to its build.
• Who it's for: The Philips pick is ideal for listeners prioritizing all-day wearability and immersive soundscapes, while the Austrian Audio option suits engineers and enthusiasts who demand accuracy and physical durability.
The Philips SHP6000 is engineered primarily for the listener who wants to disappear into their music without feeling weighed down or fatigued. Its most defining characteristic is the emphasis on comfort through its over-ear design, which utilizes foam materials to create a seal around the ear. This specific construction supports the claim of being a "sound companion" for extended periods, making it an excellent candidate for those looking for gaming headphones for sleeping or simply relaxing after a long day. The enclosure material is designed to provide a soft interface against the skin, ensuring that the pressure points common with rigid plastic frames are minimized.
From a performance standpoint, this model targets the music lover who values High Resolution Audio. With a frequency range extending from 8 Hz to 40,000 Hz, the SHP6000 aims to reproduce original studio master recordings more genuinely than standard CD formats. This wide spectrum means you will hear details in the treble that often get lost in cheaper sets, paired with a dynamic driver size of 40 millimeters that delivers the deep bass many users seek. The impedance of roughly 32 ohms and sensitivity of 103 dB suggest these are easy to drive, meaning they work well with a variety of sources without needing a dedicated amplifier, yet still offer the volume and clarity required for serious listening.

However, this product is not for everyone. If your priority is building longevity or professional rigidity, the reliance on foam and plastic components might feel less substantial compared to premium studio gear. The controls are limited to push buttons on the media control side, which works fine for basic management but lacks the tactile feedback of touch interfaces. Furthermore, while the noise isolation is present, it relies on the passive seal of the ear cup rather than active cancellation. You should skip this model if you require a detachable cable for easy replacement or if you need the absolute lowest distortion possible for critical mixing work, as the design philosophy here leans heavily toward enjoyment and comfort rather than technical correction.
The Austrian Audio Hi-X20 is built for the discerning musician, producer, or audiophile who refuses to compromise on signal purity and physical resilience. Unlike the softer approach of the Philips, the Hi-X20 features a closed-back design reinforced with metal components for stability. This structural choice ensures that the headphones can withstand the rigors of travel and daily studio use without warping. The inclusion of a carry bag and a detachable 3-meter cable indicates a design philosophy centered on portability and long-term maintenance, allowing users to swap cables if one fails rather than discarding the entire unit.
At the heart of this headphone is the proprietary 44mm Hi-X driver technology. This innovation is specifically tuned to deliver extremely low noise across all frequencies, resulting in balanced mids and highs with clear bass definition. While the frequency range caps at 24 kHz—slightly lower than the Philips specification—the focus here is on quality over sheer quantity of hertz. The goal is to replace memory foam earpads easily when they wear out, ensuring the acoustic seal remains perfect over years of use. The impedance is lower at 25 ohms, making them highly sensitive and responsive even when connected to devices with modest power output. This makes the Hi-X20 a versatile tool for both home applications and professional studio environments where accurate monitoring is non-negotiable.
This model is best suited for individuals who need to track their sound or mix with confidence, knowing the reproduction is free from unnecessary coloration. The folding and swiveling earcups add to the compact nature of the device, making it easier to store in a bag alongside other gear. However, the trade-off lies in the weight and the firmness of the fit. At 400 grams, it is a substantial piece of hardware that might feel heavy during very long sessions compared to lighter alternatives. Additionally, the control method relies on touch, which some users find less intuitive than physical buttons. If you are looking for a headset purely for background relaxation or sleep where weight is the primary concern, the Hi-X20 might be overkill and too dense for your needs.

In my opinion, I would buy the Austrian Audio Hi-X20 for my personal collection because the combination of metal durability and Hi-X driver technology offers a level of reliability and sonic accuracy that justifies the investment. The ability to replace ear pads and swap cables extends the lifespan of the product significantly, which is crucial for anyone treating audio gear as a long-term tool. However, if your primary goal is for sleeping, I must pivot my recommendation to the Philips SHP6000. The softer foam construction and lighter profile make it far less intrusive when lying on your side, providing a cozy, immersive experience without the clunkiness of metal frames pressing against your ears. Ultimately, choose the Austrian Audio for work and the Philips for rest.
Both models are wired and isolate sound passively, but the Philips SHP6000 is generally better suited for sleeping due to its lighter weight and softer foam padding, which reduces discomfort when lying down.
No, the Hi-X20 has a low impedance of 25 ohms and high sensitivity, meaning it will produce plenty of volume and detail when connected directly to smartphones, laptops, or portable players without extra amplification.
The Philips SHP6000 emphasizes a wider frequency range with deep bass and high-resolution audio, while the Austrian Audio Hi-X20 focuses on low distortion and balanced mid-range clarity for professional monitoring tasks.
Yes, the Hi-X20 comes with a detachable 3-meter cable and includes a 1/4-inch plug adapter, whereas the Philips SHP6000 features a fixed connection typical of consumer-grade stereo headsets.
