The period of American colonialization of the Philippines was 48 years. It began with the cession of the Philippines to the U.S. by Spain in 1898 and lasted until the U.S. recognition of Philippine independence in 1946. After independence in 1946, many Americans chose to remain in the Philippines while maintaining relations with relatives in the US.Â
CHARACTERISTICS OF LITERATURE DURING THIS PERIOD:
The language used in writing were Spanish and Tagalog and the dialects of the different regions. But the writers in Tagalog, continued in their lamentations on the conditions of the country and their attempts to arouse love for one's native language and the writers in the English imitated the themes and methods of the Americans.
