Thank you all who came out and made the good time possible! Photos from the event are now posted.
This event will take place on Saturday February 8th, 2020. Rounds begin at 4:00 PM sharp and an informal registration process will take place prior. Please plan on showing up by 3:45 PM. We will end game play at 7:00 PM and distribute prizes and swag afterward.
This event will take place in the tournament hall of the Philadelphia SCG Open at the Valley Forge Casino and Resort. Since the availability of table space will shift as the day progresses, we'll settle on a section of the hall near our start time. We've contacted SCG organized play and they will do their best to point to a location that minimizes the chance of disruption. It will likely be easy to find us, but we will also be posting our where-abouts on our Discord server.
There is no monetary cost associated with the entry of this event. However, we ask that you donate one Old School card to the pool to be signed by each participant and distributed after game play concludes.
This event will use the Eternal Central ruleset with a notable exception to the reprint policy. We will be using our "regular meet-up" reprint/proxy policy, which is outlined below.
As a rule, the community will be open to reprints with art from the "newer" sets as long as the reprints use the original frame. As an example, an Ice Ace printing of Icy Manipulator is likely to be found in accordance with the aesthetic value of the community. However, a Dominaria (2018 expansion) version of Icy Manipulator will almost certainly not be tolerated.
For regular meet-up play, proxies, whether they be modified versions of other cards, other cards that clearly serve as a stand-in (e.g. Chaos Confetti for Chaos Orb), original artist's sketches on blank cards, or player-altered cards may be found to be acceptable as long as they are clearly distinguishable from other proxies or the cards they were proxied upon. Please be sure to consider the aesthetic appeal of any proxies you choose to include.
We will also deviate from the round time limit policy found in the Eternal Central ruleset. See details below.
Pairings will be randomly assigned at the start of the event. A player with a first round bye is given a match win. Each match is played best of three with sideboard access for games two and three.
At the conclusion of each of your matches or upon late arrival, you will update the scoreboard with your current record. You then opt to enter the wait list immediately or after a break. When a player enters the wait list, the player with the highest score pairs with the player with the next highest score with whom they have not yet been paired. This process continues until no more pairings are possible. Resolve three(+) way ties as gentlemen and gentle-ladies. Pairings are attempted again when the wait list is updated.
Each player begins the event with 0 points. Points are accrued as follows: +3 points for a match win and -1 point for a match loss. When time is called at 7:00 PM, your current match ends immediately with no result and you enter a sudden death Chaos Orb flipping contest with your opponent. The winner of this contest earns +1 point and the loser 0 points.
We are imposing a 4 match minimum. Once time is called at 7:00 PM, each unstarted match below this minimum counts as a match loss.
There is no match time limit. The hope is to allow players to begin a new match as soon as possible if they choose. As an escape route for prolonged matches, we will implement the Chaos Orb challenge, which is outlined below.
At any time during a match, you may challenge your opponent to a sudden death Chaos Orb flipping contest. Should the challenged player accept, game play ends and a sudden death Chaos Orb contest begins. If the challenger wins the contest, the match ends with no result. If the challenged player wins the contest, the round ends as if the challenged player won the match.
Any player may decline a Chaos Orb challenge. Any player is free to concede a match at any time. There are no intentional draws.
The top ranked player after game play concludes will receive a participant-signed Beta Llanowar Elves. Then, following rank from high to low, participants will draft the donated and signed cards to take home. Tiebreakers will be executed in the following order: total matches started, Chaos Orb flipping contests won, farthest traveled, then sudden death Chaos Orb flipping contests among the remaining tied parties.
