During Week 2 of the course we'll take a 1-day field trip to a small farm. There you'll meet the Fresno Pacific University students and faculty that you'll joining for the 13-day field trip, and together you'll participate in a variety of active educational experiences.
The 13-day field trip will begin on Saturday, July 12. We'll begin with a 3-day/2-night backpacking trip, to learn basic backpacking skills and get a taste for life in the wilderness. Then we will go to "base camp," a large private lodge up in Wawona, Yosemite, for several days of study, recreation, short hikes, and communal experience. Phone and Wifi access at the lodge will be limited, so please plan accordingly.
When base camp is complete, we will launch into our multi-day backpacking expedition, continuing our study of environmental ethics surrounded by the magnificent beauty of the High Sierra. We will then return to our base camp lodge for one final evening of reflection and integration before finally returning to Fresno.
Backpacking involves carrying everything you need to survive in a large backpack, and then hiking with it multiple miles. Often the trails involve significant changes in elevation, which means going up or down hills. When fully packed, your backpack will weigh approximately 35-50 lbs.
Because most people are not used to the physical challenge of backpacking, physical training to prepare for the field trip is strongly encouraged. The stronger and fitter you are, the more fun you will have!
