History

Phi Pi Alpha was established in 1978 by students of the Fire Protection Administration and Technology program at CSULA. In its early years, Phi Pi Alpha consisted of men who were already professionally active within the fire service. Over the years, Phi Pi Alpha has been recognized by the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Los Angeles Fire Department. Due to the hard work and commitment of past individuals within Phi Pi Alpha, we have been able to build upon the foundation set and continue to strive for excellence. Today, we consist of Fire Students, some of whom are Explorers, Cadets, Volunteer Fire Fighters, Fire Fighters in the Forestry Service, and EMT’s. Together we continue to educate ourselves in order to make sound decisions on the fire ground.

Part of the tradition and duty of Phi Pi Alpha is to better educate the students, faculty, and staff of CSULA as well as the citizens of the surrounding areas in fire safety. Phi Pi Alpha takes part in promotional events within the fire department as well as holds demonstrations on campus. These on-campus events consist of fire fighter physical training, blood drives, health and safety expos, emergency preparedness expos, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)-First Aid training, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, and distributing fire safety and emergency preparedness information during fundraisers, as well as conducting outreach programs at local junior colleges, high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools. Phi Pi Alpha’s mission is to motivate everyone to excel in his or her academic success. As the only Fire Fraternity in California, we provide something innovative and educational for those who are driven to have a career in the fire service.
