What's the idea?
PhD Your Way is an annual, online event aimed at people from underrepresented groups in mathematics who want to understand the "Whats, Whys and the Hows" of applying for a mathematics PhD. The event will start from the basics - so no prior knowledge required.
The event will feature informative talks alongside the opportunity to speak with current maths PhD students based at a variety of universities in the UK.
Information about how to apply for a maths PhD is often scattered across dozens of websites, or passed down through word of mouth. We want to break down that barrier for potential applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds and lived experiences.
A typical PyW event
PhD Your Way events span only one afternoon, and there'll be talks, panel discussions and the opportunity to talk with current maths PhD students.
Hosted completely virtually, we send out an information booklet about each of the attending universities in advance, so you can know before hand what to expect on the day.
In the morning of the event, we'll send you a meeting link, and all you have to do is join!
It can be a struggle to find clear information on PhDs, especially for people without current connections to academia. we provide a "blank slate" perspective on applying, starting from:
what exactly does a maths PhD student do?
what are the experiences of underrepresented groups?
how do PhD applications work?
what should you consider before applying?
This should help you make an informed decision on applying for mathematics PhDs in the UK. You'll also have the opportunity to talk in an informal context (like a job-fair) with maths PhD students from over all over the UK!
