Pharmaceutical analysis determines the purity, concentration, active compounds, shelf life, rate of absorption in the body, identity, stability, rate of release etc. of a drug. Testing a pharmaceutical product involves a variety of analyses, and the analytical processes described in this book are used in industries as diverse as food, beverages, cosmetics, detergents, metals, paints, water, agrochemicals, biotechnological products and pharmaceuticals.
The mathematics involved is notoriously difficult, but this much-praised and well established textbook, now revised and updated for its fifth edition, guides a student through the complexities with clear writing and the author's expertise from many years' teaching pharmacy students.
High-pressure liquid chromatography remains at the heart of pharmaceutical analysis and its most up-to-date version, ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography, is becoming more widely adopted since it can offer faster analyses. Chapter 12 has been revised to reflect recent developments in liquid chromatography.

Changes have also been made to Chapters 1, 3 and 11. The promised advance in techniques with potential for use in direct process control such as near infra red spectroscopy (NIRS) has been slow, so this section has not been revised. It is to be hoped that perhaps for the next edition I will be able to write an account of how NIRS process control has revolutionised pharmaceutical manufacture.
Pharmaceutical analysis determines the purity, concentration, active compounds, shelf life, rate of absorption in the body, identity, stability, rate of release etc. of a drug. Testing a pharmaceutical product involves a variety of chemical, physical and microbiological analyses. It is reckoned that over 10 billion is spent annually in the UK alone on pharmaceutical analysis, and the analytical processes described in this book are used in industries as diverse as food, beverages, cosmetics, detergents, metals, paints, water, agrochemicals, biotechnological products and pharmaceuticals.

Two new chapters have been added to the new edition covering methods used in the quality control of biotechnologically produced drugs, and electrochemical biosensors. There is continuous learning reinforcement throughout the book by way of worked calculation examples and self-assessment test questions.

- explain the basic concepts and scopes of different analytical techniques - compare and contrast advantages, disadvantages and applications of different analytical procedures - identify the actions and mechanisms of different instruments - analyze the data and graphical presentations of different experiments done using analytical procedures - solve relevant mathematical problems and assess the quality control parameters of pharmaceutical products.
Eshaba Karim joined the Department of Pharmacy at BRAC University as a Lecturer in January 2019. She has obtained an MSc in Pharmaceutical Analysis degree from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow and a BPharm degree from North South University. For her MSc degree project, she developed a novel analytical method using HPLC. She has gained research experience in microbiology during her undergraduate degree programme. After completion of her undergraduate studies, she worked as a pharmacist at Apollo Hospitals Dhaka until she left to pursue the MSc degree. Her research interest includes chemical analysis primarily using HPLC.
This new book, from the editor of the highly successful Pharmaceutical Analysis, sets out to define the area of pharmaceutical chemistry as distinct from medicinal chemistry. It focuses less on prototypes of drugs that perhaps never came to market and more on the drugs currently in use. The emphasis in the book is on the physicochemical properties of drug molecules and, in so far as they are known, the way that these properties govern the interaction of the drug with its target. Important physicochemical properties include pKa and partition coefficient and the properties of the structural elements within the drug which provide interactions with the target via a range of intermolecular forces. The last fifteen years has seen a great advance in the knowledge of protein structures and a strong emphasis is given to the interaction of drugs with proteins which shape the majority of drug mechanisms.
Pharmaceutical Analysis is exceptional because it emphasizes applications relevant to the pharmaceutical sciences. Students who read this textbook will become very familiar with the impact of analytical chemistry on drug identification, quantification, and separation. An important strength of this book is that it skillfully achieves a compromise between theory and application. Chemical and physical principles are presented with an appropriate level of sophistication, allowing the reader to grasp theoretical underpinnings of the analytical methods without being overwhelmed by excessive detail. At the same time, practical issues relating to instrument design or data analysis are addressed in sufficient detail so that students understand how specific approaches are used to solve real problems in the pharmaceutical sciences.
Includes worked calculations to demonstrate mathematics in use for pharmaceutical analysis. Focuses on key points rather than a large number of facts to help readers really understand the field as well as pass exams. Includes self-assessment, focussing on simple arithmetical calculation results from analytical data. New to this edition
The text has been thoroughly updated, with new information on biopharmaceuticals and vaccines as well as clinical development and target identification. Drug discovery and development continues to evolve rapidly and this new edition reflects important changes in the landscape.
Edited by industry experts Raymond Hill and Duncan Richards, this market-leading text is suitable for undergraduates and graduates undertaking degrees in pharmacy, pharmacology, toxicology, and clinical development through to those embarking on a career in the pharmaceutical industry. 006ab0faaa
