Your browser may prompt you with a pop-up asking you to grant permission for the Canvas application to open and use your computer's webcam and microphone. You will need to grant this permission so that you can record your media submission.

You can use the Rich Content Editor to record video and audio media. You can record media for any length of time, but shorter media recordings are recommended. If your media is longer than 15 minutes, you may want to consider recording and uploading using an external provider. Longer media recordings require more time to render and may be interrupted without a stable internet connection.

PLEASE NOTE: This Record Media area uses Adobe Flash, which has  been deprecated and has an official end-of-life on December 31, 2020. This feature often will not work and we recommend recording the video or audio on a phone or from a camera/voice recorder (you can check one out at the Information Commons, Building 16 first floor), then using the Upload Media tab to upload the video or audio file that you can save from whichever device you use. This way you will have the file and can back it up and/or re-upload if something goes wrong with the submission (the Record Media area does not save the video anywhere if it does not submit correctly).

Though there are several ways for media to automatically end up in "My Media" without you having to take any action (such as recording Zoom sessions to the cloud or leveraging the on-campus podcasting system), users are, of course, also able to manually upload files within Canvas.

Note: If you used Zoom to record your media content, it may take some time depending on the length of the record for the Zoom recording to transfer to Kaltura and your personal My Media collection. You should receive an email from OSU Kaltura Support when your media has been transferred and is ready for you to use.

To open the media upload tool, select the Media tab [1] and click the Record/Upload Media button [2]. Your Assignment submission options may look different that the image above.

Kaltura is a media management system that can be used to upload video files as well as to create webcam recordings. Videos in Kaltura can be viewed on phones, tablets, and computers. Access Kaltura through your Canvas course site.

This Studio tab will take you directly to My Uploads where the media for submission can be selected. It is recommended that students use the Studio link in the global navigation to create media they plan on submitting as an assignment.

The below procedure submits media you have access to as a Canvas assignment. This can be Echo360 media you own or media that lives in a group where you have Post permissions. The Echo360 embed media dialog box also allows you to upload and submit a video as a single process through the same interface. You may even have the option to create a new recording using Universal Capture Personal, if this feature has been enabled for students.

It may be the case that a student has submitted their assignment as a media file - for instance, if they have uploaded a photo of their written work. You can view and download this submission in the Speedgrader.

In some cases, the uploaded image is presented in a video file format, this may happen if the student uses "Record media" to add their image rather than "File Upload". You will see a message saying This submission is a media recording." To access this file, click Click here to view.

For video assignments under 500MB, a Quercus assignment can be created to accept an audio or video submission in the form of a media recording (either a recorded video or uploaded video file). For video assignments over 500MB, students can submit a Website URL of a link to a video that is streamed on a platform such as MyMedia.

For example, if your assignment requires both an uploaded file and a media recording, your students can upload a file the first time they submit the assignment and then resubmit the assignment with a media recording. (You would enable both submission types when you create the assignment.)

The Canvas Rich Content Editor (RCE) has a small "Embed My Media" filmstrip button that allows users to embed media directly into Canvas content. This button is directly linked to your My Media collection and appears on any content creation page in Canvas, including assignments, discussions, pages, quizzes, discussion posts, text entry assignment submissions, and quiz essay questions. We recommend creating and uploading your media to My Media before using the RCE "Embed My Media" button.

Add an audio/video comment to the submission. Media comments can be added via this API, however, note that there is not yet an API to generate or list existing media comments, so this functionality is currently of limited use. 006ab0faaa
