The "PG" comes from a groundbreaking encryption tool from the 90's called PGP, which was short for Pretty Good Privacy. PGP is still widely used and still considered a formidable force of security. The story behind its development and how the creator (Phil Zimmermann) was persecuted by the US government is worth reading about.
