The Peace as a Global Language (PGL) Committee is pleased to announce that this year's conference will be held on Saturday November 9th, 2024, once again at Toyo University under the theme:
"Technology and AI: Implications for Peace in Communities at the Local and Global Level."
As technology and AI become integral to daily life worldwide, they bring both benefits and challenges. From transforming businesses of all sizes to enhancing consumer convenience, their influence is undeniable. Yet, even amid this technological optimism, questions remain: What are the tangible benefits and risks of these systems? How do they impact society at both the local community level and on a broader global scale?
Particularly concerning are the implications of AI for indigenous peoples. Research consistently highlights the socio-economic disparities faced by these communities—lower life expectancy, higher unemployment rates, poorer mental health, and increased substance abuse compared to majority populations. These issues are often linked to the ongoing legacy of colonization, cultural genocide, and assimilation policies. Prejudices and discrimination persist, largely due to the majority society’s lack of understanding of indigenous histories and cultures. In this context, can AI serve as a tool to support indigenous resilience and empowerment, or will it perpetuate existing inequalities?
Indigenous communities worldwide are working to reclaim their cultural pride and resist further assimilation. This conference aims to explore how AI and technology might contribute to these efforts.
PGL 2024 will gather indigenous peoples, scholars, and experts from around the world to re-examine colonization and exchange knowledge on initiatives aimed at breaking cycles of ignorance, discrimination, and cultural injustice. Through these shared ideas, we hope to create a future where communities can learn from one another, foster mutual respect, and thrive—while preserving cultural traditions for generations to come.
We warmly invite indigenous peoples, scholars, students, and experts to join us this November at Toyo University’s Akabanedai Campus, Faculty of INIAD, in Tokyo. Together, let us reflect on past and present injustices and explore the potential for a peaceful, prosperous, and just future for all.
