Born in Virginia, Willa Cather (1873-1947) and her family moved to Nebraska when she was nine. Upon graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1896, Willa Cather moved to Pittsburgh where she lived for 10 years, writing for a women's magazine, Home Monthly, then working as a editor and critic for the Pittsburgh Leader newspaper. She also contributed stories and verse to a local magazine called The Library. In addition, while living in Pittsburgh, Willa Cather taught English and Latin at Allegheny High School on Pittsburgh's Northside.
