Drawing has unique conventions for different situations, contexts, industries. As an engineer we were taught isometric, where you could measure off dimensions from the drawing with a scale. Working in Japan at Hitachi I used elevation drawings, like others designers in the studio. As a designer there was a focus upon perspective - especially for presentation renders - as a codified and stylistic simulation of western pictorial reality. In Chinese and Japanese water colours the pictorial view did not use perspective. I saw architects favour axonometric. For motorcycle design I have for years got students to make use of elevation collages in photoshop.
Key to drawing is the slow focus upon the observational, and the narrative.
For Injection Moulding, for Fabrication, for repair manuals, for client meetings in consultancies, for sheet metal.
Drawing for furniture design, for car design, for thinking, for detailing, for story boarding, for service design.
For engineering, for flat products, for sheet metal development visualization.
Digital drawing, pen and ink drawing, with pantone, with pencil.
