Violence in Schools
1. Read:Gerler, Edwin R. Handbook of School Violence. Routledge, 2004. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&AuthType=ip,shib&db=nlebk&AN=563947&site=eds-live&scope=site. Accessed September 27,2019
Summarize:
Connectedness is described as the counterbalance in schools, in Edwin Gerlers, “Handbook of School Violence.” The Haworth Press, Inc, pp 1-8, accessed 10 sept 2019. “Conventional connectedness usually includes the social worlds of schools, teachers, readings, religion, and family.” This basically means if you balance within these everything should work out just fine and there should be no issues between peers. On the other hand, if one or more of these things don’t hold together or everyone does not agree it can lead lead to teasing, bullying and violence. Students who don’t agree with everything that everyone else does are usually sought out as an outcast. Connectedness is the participation in everything combined in the above statement(Gerlers, 10). being involved in similar activities, clubs, and sports as others you tend to fit in more and become socially accepted. If a student decides to go against the choices of others then they are targeted as different and usually become victim to bullying and violence.
Assess:
This source was helpful in many ways. It shows us how connectedness is the key to fitting in with others and how when one person disagrees with another it can cause a few problems that can become more serious. I think this source is very reliable because it states what can cause problems in schools. This source is objective as well.
Reflect:
I will definitely use this source. It’s very useful and helped me really understand what can lead to bullying and violence in schools. It fits because in order to understand the root of the problem. This article has not changed my thought, because I knew that being different could cause so many issues and lead to more intense situations.
2. Read: Ha Thi Hai Le, et al. “Mental Health Problems Both Precede and Follow Bullying among Adolescents and the Effects Differ by Gender: A Cross-Lagged Panel Analysis of School-Based Longitudinal Data in Vietnam.” International Journal of Mental Health Systems, no. 1, 2019, p. 1. Accessed 29 August, 2019
Summarize: Le,et.al. found “students who had social and emotional difficulties were more likely to be bullied.” Students who suffer from depression or anxiety are more likely to be victimized. Other students see these mental issues as a sign of weakness and use this to their advantages. There are six measures of bullying victimization (Le, Ha Thi Hai, 2). The first consists of physical violence like hitting and kicking. The second becomes more serious and consists of things like property damage and theft. Threatening is the third now this one can be scary because it can lead into measures four through five they force bullies to victimize people and make them do things they don’t want to do. If the victim refuses this can lead to more demeaning things like name calling, rumors, and even exclusion. With all this in mind and mental issues it can lead to a much more serious issue.
Assess: This Source helps me because it shows the way bullies can use students mindsets to their advantages. It shows us how a bully can force students to do things they don't want to do in fear of being bullied more.
Reflect: I will be using this source in my project as it helps show what can lead to violence and more serious issues in school. It fits in my project because I can now truly understand the mindset of victims to school violence and bullies. This source has shown me the deeper meaning of school violence and that there’s more to it than just teasing or name calling.
3.Read:Burk, Brooke N., et al. “Who Is a Bully Anyway?: Examining Perceptions of Bullying among Parents and Children.” Journal of Park & Recreation Administration, vol. 37, no. 2, Summer 2019, pp. 80–98. Accessed 29 August, 2019
Summarize: Burk, Brooke N., et, al states that bullying is defined as a negative interaction that is not only physical but also verbal. Bullying does not stop in schools and is a leading problem to suicide, juvenile delinquency, and much more. In schools it can cause many problems including the way students interact with one another. Victims often find themselves alone. They become depressed which can lead to severe anxiety. Bullies usually target weaker peers with low self-esteem. They thrive on making themselves more dominant than others. These bullies usually have a lot of self-esteem but just like their victims they might also struggle with some forms of depression.
Assess: This source useful. Yes, it helps explain what a bully is but it doesn't really go into depth about violence in schools. Even though school violence does start with bullying,I think this source is slightly biased because it does use outside sources and other peoples stories, but it’s also objective because it uses facts.
Reflect: I might use this source if I can get it to relate to my topic. It all really depends on where I can fit it into my final draft.
4. Read:DUPLECHAIN, ROSALIND, and ROBERT MORRIS. “School Violence: Reported School Shootings and Making Schools Safer.” Education, vol. 135, no. 2, Winter 2014, pp. 145–150. Accessed 29 August, 2019
Summarize: I decided to look into school shooters and the number one risk factors was bullying. The article says 75% of school shootings are done by bullied students. Duplechain,et al, “School shootings and making Schools Safer.” accessed 15 Sept 2019 states, “ Individuals who blame mental illnesses miss the real concerns and affects of bullying.” People think that school shooters are individuals who are sick minded people, but most school shooters are students who have been bullied and just lost it. School shooting is never okay and I'm not justifying their actions at all. The article also clarifies that school shooters reached out, but no one listened or did anything about it. In more than 80% of the cases at least one person knew the attacker was planning something (Duplichain, 146).
Assess: This source is helpful because it shows us the effects of bullying and what it can lead to. It also shows what bullying can lead to and the severe consequences.
Reflect: I will be using this source mainly because it was super helpful in what simple violence can lead to. This article is definitely a serious and well documented article overall.
