THE PEWAUKEE SCHOLARSHIP FUND was started in 1968. It is run by volunteers who raise funds and support from the Pewaukee community and businesses. Funds are invested and the interest in those investments is given as scholarship money to Pewaukee High School students wishing to further their education either through a four-year college, a community college, technical college or nursing school. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of citizenship, character, community service and need as well as scholastic ability.
Dr. JoAnn Sternke considered herself very lucky to be a part of the Pewaukee School District where she served as Superintendent of Schools from 2001-2017. JoAnn is most proud of the staff she was lucky enough to call colleagues and how committed everyone is to our mission of opening the door to each child’s future. The Pewaukee School District has been dedicated to using the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence, an organizational framework to achieve performance excellence. In 2013 the Pewaukee School District was honored to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, a presidential honor few organizations have attained. Under JoAnn’s tenure, numerous program improvements were implemented to increase student achievement. Some of these initiatives include a successful 1:1 laptop Initiative in elementary through high school, four-year-old Kindergarten, advanced high school course offerings with Northwestern University, elementary World Language, middle school 5x5 block schedule, and increased high school graduation requirements. Before she retired from the District, Dr. Sternke set up and funded this scholarship as a way to encourage and help students who wish to become educators. To qualify for this scholarship, the student must intend to become a teacher or acknowledge how one or more Pewaukee teachers had a significant influence on their Pewaukee school experience or their choice of study in college. The award is for a one time $2500 scholarship and is to be awarded to the best candidate that will pursue an education major or acknowledges in their essay a teacher that has had a significant influence on their Pewaukee school experience or major/college selection.

Community. Volunteer. Leader. Family and Friends. These are just a few words that describe Ann Wright. Currently retired, Ann was a 20 year employee of the Pewaukee School District. In addition, she has served the Pewaukee community for over 30 years in various capacities such as Pewaukee PTO President, PHS Blue Line Hockey President, two Superintendent Search Committees, Pewaukee School Board, 20+ years member and former President of Pewaukee Scholarship Fund, and an active volunteer for her church. The Grandpa Watt Scholarship has been created by his three grandsons, JJ, Derek, and TJ Watt, to honor his legacy. Grandpa Watt served in the Korean War and then went on to raise his three sons in Pewaukee, Wisconsin, where they all graduated from Pewaukee High School. He enjoyed watching all sporting activities as his three grandsons wrestled, and played baseball, basketball, and football. He could be heard loud and clear cheering for everyone! He even cheered for the opposing team at times! Grandpa Watt was an excellent fan supporting all athletes, cheerleaders, and coaches. He would do anything for anyone and was an excellent role model for his sons, grandsons, and anyone who knew him.

Sanjay and Shefali Vallecha are beyond grateful to the Pewaukee School District for the outstanding shaping of their sons' (Swapnil and Sanshray) futures. To pay it forward, and to help others in their own educational journey, the family established the Vallecha Family Scholarship in 2023. This is an annual $1,001 scholarship to be awarded to a student that has a 3.0 GPA or better, has shown community involvement/volunteerism, and is in financial need.
Why is the family funding the scholarship for $1,001? The Indian rupee 1 is part of the North Indian Culture. It is an amount, or a shagan, which is given at the beginning of something. The number 0 signifies the end while the number 1 signifies the beginning. Because the number 1 is indivisible, it is seen as a permanent blessing to the person who receives it or the beginning of a new stage of life to others.

We are shaped by an infinite amount of variables, none more impactful than the people in our lives. It's hard to imagine who we'd be, or what life would look like, without these influential individuals. Despite having such a positive impact, we don't often share what they mean to us, which is where the "Cardinal Note" comes into play. Writing a one-page page note to them could be easy, or could be difficult, but it will certainly be rewarding for both.
This scholarship was created by Andy and Maggie Voit in 2022. In theory, this scholarship has a positive impact reaching much further than the recipient who is awarded. With the requirement to share your Cardinal Note, there will be many important people learning just how much of a positive impact they've had. And maybe, more Cardinal Notes will be shared in the future, because of this Scholarship.
Why is this called a Cardinal Note? Andy's Grandma, who was a positive influence for so many, absolutely loved cardinals, and the thought that when a cardinal appears, an angel is near. Unfortunately, she passed away in the fall of 2021. Her impact as a teacher, mother, grandmother, friend, community member, etc has been immeasurable and will live on. While we like to believe that she knew just how special she was to those she loved, we can only wish we had one more day to tell her. With this scholarship, we hope that it provides you an opportunity to tell those you love just how special they are, while you have the chance.
Faith. Family. Community. Sports Enthusiast. These are a few words to describe Carly Tyggum. Carl was a teacher of history, physical and driver’s education, and passionate coach. He had a great love of athletics and sports excelling in baseball, basketball, and tennis where he is in the University of Wisconsin Whitewater’s Hall of Fame. He was the epitome of a Pewaukee Pirate fan, where you would always see him watching, supporting and cheering on basketball, baseball, soccer, football, and any athletic event. Carl and wife, Donna lived in the Pewaukee community for 18 years and his greatest joy was watching his four grandchildren, John, Joshua, Amy and Anna compete and excel in a Pirate uniform. Carl was a lifetime member and huddle leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes where he led many student athletes to the Lord. He was a great man of faith and loved Jesus. One of his well-known sayings was “Make Jesus look good,” which he did every day and touched so many lives. Coach Tyggum will always be loved, remembered, a part of our Pewaukee community, and missed dearly.
The Carl Tyggum Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to any student who has competed in at least one high school sport for four years.

Corbin Brey a 2009 PHS graduate, AP art student and art major at UW-Milwaukee, was a lifelong learner, and patron of the arts. While in high school, he participated in choir, photography, drawings, paintings, computerized art, and physical art.. At college, Corbin continued his study of the arts. His love of music was enhanced with the personal study of many forms of music. When his body no longer allowed him to create art, he used his gift of writing to further the imagination and inspire.
